Brent Dickey is one of hundreds of relatively
unknown artists attending SXSW this year with the intention
of furthering their careers. If this Los Angeles singer-songwriter's live show is anything like his sparkling
self-titled demo of four pop-rock gems--and should the right people be there to witness it--there's no doubt he will succeed.
As a lyricist, Dickey takes an unconventional approach: "Most people
say they create in order to express themselves. But I don't believe in that. I
create in order to avoid expressing myself. My songs are three-minute disguises.
I may give you a line or two that seems to make sense but I'll mostly give you
telephone poles from a car window at 60 mph." Dickey's sound, indebted to the
production style and guitar wizardry of Rob Laufer (George Martin, Fiona Apple, Melissa Ferrick), is engaging and richly textured--reminiscent of R.E.M. with a hint of Buffalo Springfield.
