The Milwaukee Admirals were founded as a semi-professional team in 1970 and competed independently through the 1972-73 season, after which they joined the United States Hockey League. At that time the United States Hockey League was a semi-pro league, but now it is run as a junior league that prepares players in their late teens for college or professional hockey.
In their final season, the Admirals captured the USHL Championship. They were then purchased by Lloyd and Jane Pettit at which time the team moved to the International Hockey League, a full professional league with affiliations in the National Hockey League.
For the next 25 years, the Admirals competed in the IHL, but never won the Turner Cup, which was awarded to the champion of the league. After the 2000-01 season, the IHL folded, and six teams from the league, including the Admirals, were absorbed into the American Hockey League.
Mrs. Pettit passed away prior to the inaugural AHL season, and the team existed in her trust for the next four seasons. Ownerless, the Admirals flourished under the leadership of head coach Claude Noel.
In 2003-04, the Admirals captured their first professional championship with a four game sweep against the Wilkes-Bare/Scranton Penguins in the Calder Cup Finals.
After the 2004-05 season, Milwaukee businessman Harris Turer organized a group of investors to purchase the Admirals out of the estate of Jane Pettit, and the team saw a 12 percent increase in attendance after just one season of new ownership.
