Richard Kruspe BiographyRichard Zven “Scholle†Kruspe was born in Wittenberge, Germany on June 24, 1967. He is the co-founder of the band Rammstein & the lead rhythm guitarist. He is also the founder, guitarist & singer for the band Emigrate. Richard along with the other band members in Rammstein are all from East Germany. Richard is the youngest of his siblings in his family. His parents split up when he was a child & his mother remarried & they later moved to the village of Weisen. Richard did not get along with his stepfather. In an interview some years later Richard recalled how his step-father tore down his KISS poster & how he spent hours pasting it back together.Richard as a teenager was a huge fan of KISS & AC/DC. When he was 16 he & some friends went to Czechoslovakia where he bought his first guitar. He originally intended to sell it because they were very expensive & thought he could make a nice profit however, once he got back to East Germany a girl he met at a campground he was staying at asked him to play. He told her he couldn’t play but she kept insisting & Richard got mad & started to play. He later recalled “The harder I played the more excited she got†so it clicked in his head that girls liked guys who could play the guitar. That was enough motivation for him to start playing day & night for a period of almost 2 years.At the age of 19, bored with the apathetic music scene in his home town, he moved back to East Berlin & lived on Lychener Strasse & quote “made music all dayâ€. For 2 years he lived in an apartment with a drum kit & a guitar & made music by himself because he did not know anyone there. It was a lonely time for him he is quoted as saying but he used that time to explore music.In October of 1989 prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was riding through the subway. When he came above ground, he found himself in the middle of a political demonstration. He was hit on the head & arrested just for being there & thrown in jail for 6 days. Once he was out he decided to leave East Germany via Czechoslovakia. Once the Berlin Wall came down he moved back east once again.In 1989 Richard was briefly in a band called Elegantes Chaos & in 1991 Richard founded the band Orgasm Death Gimmick, however, the band’s lifespan was short-lived. In 1992 his daughter Khira Li Lindemann was born.Around this time also, after Orgasm Death Gimmick disbanded, he along with Oliver Riedel & Christoph Schneider went to the US in pursuit of their dream but the dream was shattered. It was then that Richard realized he didn’t want to make American music instead he concentrated on making music with a unique German sound.In 1993, Rammstein, the tanz-metal band was conceived. Richard asked longtime friend Till Lindemann, who was once a basket weaver to join. He overheard him singing one day & thought he had a good voice & asked him what he thought about joining the band. Till was hesitant at first but agreed & since Richard at that time couldn’t handle all the riffs, singing & songwriting on his own decided to ask Till to help write. In January of that year all four members of the band won a Berlin Music Competition, the prize was a professional demo of four songs presumably to get them a record deal. They asked Paul Landers & Christian “Flake†Lorenz of Feeling B to join them. Flake was the last one to join & really didn’t want to at first. I am sure he sees that differently now. Once they got the demo done & the record deal was secured they began on working on their debut CD Herzeleid. The rest is musical history.Fast forward to 2005. Richard announced he would like to make a solo project outside of Rammstein. Of course many fans panicked as they thought he would leave the band that he founded & helped make internationally famous.He didn’t want the project to interfere with his commitments to Rammstein so it was put on the back burner until Rammstein’s tour came to an end. Once the band was on hiatus this left Richard with some free time & some creative energy to burn.Not being one to rest on his laurels, Richard kept busy while the other Rammstein members were off on holiday. He along with longtime friend & producer of Rammstein’s CDs, Jacob Hellner, started working on Emigrate. He assembled his band of Henka Johannson (the drummer from Clawfinger), Arnaud Giroux, Olsen Involtini & Sascha Moser. Richard said he got the name from a piece of paper he found while visiting his favourite coffee shop. The name as he said “fitâ€. He had himself “emigrated†to a new land & thus Emigrate was born. Partly financed by Richard himself the CD has been a long time coming. There have been several delays yet it has been a labor of love. Finally, in September of 2006, after many rumours surfaced about the project being scrapped, the first single was offered to fans from Pilgrim Management as a gift from Richard to his fans. The single entitled Wake Up was released to newsletter subscribers. The song was full of energy & the distinct sound of Richard’s guitar playing. In November 2006 fans were given the chance to vote on their favourite song from 3 of the upcoming songs on the CD to be released on the internet. Babe was chosen by the fans. This song, a ballad, was said by some to be very reminiscent of the Cure & definitely has some hit potential. It also has less vocal effects on it & lets Richard’s natural voice shine through. Finally in the spring of 2007 My World was released by Pilgrim Management as a free download. The song is a very fast very aggressive track & is a favourite among many fans. On August 2nd, 2007 the German premier of the My World video took place. Tied to the release of the upcoming 3rd installment of Resident Evil the video featured the band in a post apocalyptic setting atop a roof of a skyscraper intertwined with snippets from the movie ensuring the possibility of a bona fide hit. It literally took just hours for it to surface on the internet reinforcing the popularity of this beloved member of Rammstein.Emigrate’s debut CD is being released August 31, 2007. The demand for this CD is great. It was listed at #2 on Amazon.De in pre-orders of all their vast catalogue of CDs. No small feat for a debut CD from a band. Richard’s popularity is no doubt the driving force behind all this. It is a given that most of Rammstein’s fans will purchase the CD but perhaps with this Richard will also be able to reach new fans as the CD is very diverse in nature & it is sung in English, something Rammstein would never do & probably shouldn’t either as it is part of their sound. It also showcases his writing & vocal abilities & gives us a larger picture of his many creative talents. Does this mean the end of Rammstein, no. If anything this may help Rammstein as Richard himself has said. Rammstein needs Emigrate & vice versa. One cannot exist without the other. Whatever the outcome, we at the team of Fans of Richard Kruspe along with all of Richard’s fans wish him well. I hope this is just the beginning…Das Model (Live)
