(The new and improved) Drop Something Records

About Me

Drop Something Records was born in 2003. Ian Peak and Kris Truitt had a dream to see the southern IL music scene flourish and grow, and wanted to play a part in its development. Over the next two years, Drop Something helped local bands get shows, merch, and attention from bigger promoters. Drop Something has worked with bands such as Amber Pacific, Hawthorne Heights, Glass Eater, and Calico System.
For four years, Drop Something worked with the local bands and promoters in Southern IL, and became a major player in the music scene there. In this time, it's popularity grew, and we began receiving emails from 10-15 touring bands a week needing shows and whatnot. It was then that we realized that the southern Illinois scene was just a small part of a much huger independant music movement.
It was then that we realized that we wanted DSR to be part of this movement too, and we started thinking of a way we could help out all of the independant bands and artists that contacted us. We booked a few touring acts whenever we could, but without a venue of our own, it was impossible to bring in every band that we thought was good, so we started thinking about how we could take the other services we offered local bands to the next level.
The first step in this process is going to be a series of compilation CD's with music from touring bands from all over. The goal of this comp series is to get touring bands exposure in areas they haven't played in as much, or at all. The equation is: band plays show, kids like band, kids pick up comp, kids get exposed to other bands on comp. If you are in an indie or underground touring band, or represent one, and are interested, see the guidelines for song submission in our blog section.
The second step of this process was to get bands without the resources, contacts, or experience necessary on the road. We formed a partnership with Flo Media Entertainment. With a staff of experienced agents, Flo Media is an up and coming agency that is sure to make a name for itself across the united states.

Influences: Dischord Records: Dischord started out in the early 80's by just putting out music from local DC punk bands. Over the years, the label picked up momentum and went on to produce bands such as Minor Threat, Fugazi, and Jaw Box. At first, Dischord was just a bunch of kids with a dream, now the people that work for Dischord have an anual salary and health insurance, and has made a name for themselves and their bands without music videos or commercial radio play. It was all done through hard work, and touring.

Deep Elm Records: Deep elm formed in the early ninetys. The label's owners wanted to start a label that signed bands based on their music only. Today, Deep Elm is one of the biggest names in the indie music scene. They have worked with bands such as Jimmy Eat World, The Appleseed Cast, Brandtson, Burns Out Bright, and planesmistakenforstars. Even though their label is flourishing, and you can buy their comps and CD's at Hot Topics all over the world, they still sign bands based on the quality of their music. Not the style of their music, or how many records they've sold on their own. Just the quality alone.
