I am here for Networking

About Me

Please accept my sincere apologies if you used to be on this friends list and have found that you are no longer there. This profile was maintained by another person for a couple of weeks, and was altered considerably in that time. By the time I regained entry, the friends list and all mail had been deleted. Thank you all for your patience, and please re-send your friend requests. I would love to continue networking with you for the good of our youth and communities.

They say you have to hit rock bottom before you can think about trying to claw your way up and out. I would have thought that death was about as 'rock bottom' as it gets, but Nikki Sixx obviously didn't.
The way I heard the story, he (temporarily) died from an overdose, woke up in the hospital, walked out of the hospital, went outside and smoked a cigarette, went home, changed the message on his answering machine - and took another dose. It's beyond anything I can comprehend to reflect on how blank a person would have to feel on the inside to run that sequence of events so rapidly.
The journals of those times, now published in book form as The Heroin Diaries , might be a year in the life of a shattered rock star - but thankfully, they weren't the final chapter. It might be a shocking read, and it might even be offensive at times, but it's also a glimmer of hope that even when you're that far down there's still a chance to make it back.
[Nikki] describes the pain: "I was in my closet with my grandfather's gun pointed at the door, needles and dirty spoons on the floor... terrified because people had slid under my front door like vapor and were in the house and were coming to get me." After more than 30 years of abusing drugs, Sixx realized he needed rehab. "I did a Google search," he says. "I was desperate to find a place."

Sixx checked into an Arizona rehab facility in 2001, and one morning, after a bout of insomnia, he had an epiphany. "After seven days of waking up at 4, I snuck out of my room," he says. "I hit my knees and said, 'I don't know if anybody's up there, but I give up. If you just remove this from me, I will do something good with my life. I can't do this anymore.' "

Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Covenant House California. See this book and cd on Amazon . Release Date: September 18, 2007.
COVENANT HOUSE CALIFORNIA is a non-profit organization that provides hope to homeless and at-risk youth (ages 18-21) and continually gives them a chance to change their lives. Since they began in 1988, they have grown to become a model of comprehensive services with critically needed programs in Los Angeles and Oakland East Bay area in California. For more than 12,000 youth each year, these services include street outreach, shelter, transitional living, health care, HIV/AIDS education, employment assistance, substance abuse counseling, psychological and psychiatric services, and a wide range of cultural and recreational activities.
Gloria
She had dreams of becoming an actress when she came here. She thought it would be easy. At least that’s the way they had made it look on TV, but Gloria, a 20 year old Covenant House resident soon found out that “making it” was more than just hopping a bus and coming to Hollywood. What Gloria found instead was that it was tougher to be on her own than she had anticipated. “I didn’t think things through” she says now. With no place to go, she was soon on the streets.
“I had only fifty bucks in my wallet when I came out here. I didn’t know what to do.” Gloria spent a week on the streets. She spent nights at a bus station , then at a hospital waiting room. When asked what it was like, she replies simply,
“It’s cold and lonely.”

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Anyone and everyone concerned with supporting at-risk youth. This is not an official profile of any kind. I am an ex-youth and family advocate.

Several issues surround this project, and I'd like to think that if you join me on this page one or more of them will be important to you.

Addiction and recovery. The topic of conversation that stands out most obviously. The journey of a recovering user cannot possibly be easy. Exorcising the demons that drive us never is. But there is hope. Faith and hope are sometimes all you'll have.

Youth - Childhood experiences, and their effect on the emerging adult are more important than most people realise. Nikki Sixx says "I don't know what happened to my childhood". I'm told the book goes into his rediscovery of his own history.

Relationships matter. The people that we interact with form a huge part of who we will become, what drives us, and where we will ultimately come to rest. "I was their only son, and I tried". Relationships matter.

Homeless youth issues. This project raises awareness of and contributes to the work of Covenant House. It is hoped that homeless youth will benefit from Nikki's experiences and work with the Heroin Diaries.

I'd like to close my eyes and pretend that this is not an epidemic, but that would be foolish. More and more young people every day are finding themselves homeless, and many are succumbing to substance abuse. If we can't get to them before it's too late, their futures will lie in ruins that will be difficult for many of them to rebuild. Some will never have the chance to rebuild. If just one young person is rescued from the streets and given another chance, it will be worth it. And if just one kid reads this and thinks "I don't wanna go there with drugs" then the project will have accomplished something great.

I believe that this book needs to be in the hands of every parent, every teacher, every youth aid worker, and every youth counselor. I'm compelled to network it, and I need your help. Every library needs a copy, and every church needs a copy. We need both the information and the education.

It may not always be palatable, but then reality never is.

For the fans:
There has also recently been the development of this profile , offering Nikki's fans the opportunity to share their own experiences with drug and alcohol issues. It's probably the best idea I have seen out of Myspace so far, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. Read the MySpace Safety Tips

Thanks for visiting, I appreciate it.
