Turkish composer, arranger, guitar player and producer Mustafa Özkent was a lesser-known but significant figure on the Ankara music scene until his music belatedly found a receptive audience in the West more than four decades into his career.
Özkent launched his career as a professional musician in Radio Ankara.A talented guitarist who was known to modify the design of his instruments to create unusual tonal qualities,
Özkent earned a reputation as a gifted maverick and by the dawn of the 1970s was in Istanbul demand as a session player, arranger, and producer, creating music that fused psychedelic and pop/rock influences with R&B grooves and jazz-influenced improvisations.
In 1973, Özkent partnered with Evren Records, a Turkish label known for its high production standards and audiophile recording techniques; Özkent booked time at one of Istanbul's finest recording facilities, and with a hand-picked team of musicians he began recording new material dominated by funky vamps, extended percussion jams, hard-grooving organ lines, and wah-wah guitars.
The resultant LP, Gençlik ile Elele (Hand in Hand with Youth), sounded as if it were designed for hip-hop DJs in search of funky breaks, even though it was cut years before the nascent South Bronx scene began to flower (not to mention half a world away).
In 2006, the musically omnivorous record collectors at the British Finders Keepers label reissued Özkent's masterpiece, and it earned rave reviews in the U.K. as well as the United States. Meanwhile,
Özkent (who helped Finders Keepers with the reissue of 'Gençlik ile Elele' Özkent remains active in Turkey, releasing the album Dijital Guitar in 2005 and Dijital Piano in 2006.(MARK DEMING)
After what seems like a decade of cross continental detective work and buffonery ,Finders Keepers Records finally have the auspicious privilege to introduce the incredible music of Anadolu pop's very own Dr.Frankestein
Maestro Mustafa Özkent.
Regarded amongst hardened collectors of Anatolian rock as THE DADDY of all Turkish rarities, this record simply has to be heard to be believed and even then it's still literally UNBELIEVABLE.Is this record for real? Either this guys had time-machines or DJ Kool Herc had secret Eastern connections.
If a box of original copies of this seldom-sighted album had made it's way to the South Bronx in the late seventies then Mustafa Özkent woulld be shearing throne space with other ultimate breaks and beats such as Michael Winers 'Incredible bongo band',Funky Drummer and Johny the Fox bringing modern record collectors new found Turkish obsession forward by some 20 years.(ANDY VOTEL)
In the early 1970s,Mustafa Özkent put together a group of off-kilter musicians and stylized fuzzy production to create the best American funk record never made.
This lost gem is everything break seekers look for in a record:extend jams, inventive percussion, and no silly vocals to get in the way.
It's rare to hear a record this funky coming from outside the west, but Özkent proves that deep-fried keyboard and guitar licks are just as friendly to near east traditions.(DAILY OM)
According to the blurb in the liner booklet, vinyl copies of this 1973 album are rarer than rare.
They're rarer than hen's teeth, rarer than screaming mandrake roots,so rare that they cost over 600 dollars each and %90 of the original pressing was eaten by wolves, ladies and gentlemen,
,wolves and as for the completely irrelevant chimpanzee wrapping itself in loops of the tape on the front, well,no Finders Keepers does'nt understand it either.
Özkent was a nationalist, but he blends his Turkish folk influences so perfectly in to the modernity of the psyche-jazz-funk that you might not even notice them unless you knew what you were listening for. (POP MATTERS)
If You're an aficionado of Anotolian folk music and where
equally thrilled by the recent appearance on CD of Mustafa Özkent's ''Gençlik ile elele''(Caspar Lewellyn Smith-OBSERVER)
This Turkish album first came out in 1973.The zany cover art (a monkey messing around with a reel to reel tape recorder)suggest this is a lighthearted endeavour, but the album contains some serious funk that hold its own against the relentless grooves of American funk gods like the meters.
Despite this release being so funky, this dededly western-sounding record never strays too far from Mustafa Özkent's Anatolian musical heritage.(E MAN GROOVING)
Mustafa Özkent studied music in Brussels Academie Musique D'Ixelles. He played and arranged for Radio Istanbul Jazz band.He added extra frets to his special guitar to play traditional tunes.
He made concerts and TV shows in USA,Canada,France, Russia,Germany,Holland,Belgium. He has 15 instrumental CD and LP.Over 100 songs,300 hundred productions and 3000 arragements.
He wrote a Harmony book for modal, traditional scales (ÖNCÜ MÜZİK)
Mustafa Özkent (Gençlik ile elele). The song titles are in Turkish, and Mustafa Özkent has had a long career as a Turkish studio musician.
Yet except for an ocassional belly-dance-tune phrase on his electric guitar, the music on this instrumental album, originally released in 1973,could have been a forgotten spy-mowie sound track.
Conga drums, electric organ, scrubbing rhythm guitare ,funk bass lines,wah-wah-pedaled leads.
Who says world music has to be exotic?(NEW YORK TIMES)
Gençlik ile elele story is strange as Andy Votel relates in the liner notes ,Özkent was ''an expert in both carpentry in electronics.
This along with Özkent's adherence to traditional Turkish sounds, led to a new guitar which Özkent treated so with ''additional frets enabling him to replicate unique notes similar to that of a saz or the lute''.
THe result is what can best be described as an Eastern European Incredible Bongo Band.(STYLUS MAGAZINE)
Far mor playable the instrumentals on Özkent's ''Genclik ile elele''adorned with a tape-strewn,suit-jacketed chimpanzee on the cover, comprise a seriously oddball and impossibly dope roll of session-man grooves which stand up to the best library music in the 70s had to offer.
Rooted in native melodies put playing to a world audience,Özkent offers up an unstoppable collection of drum breaks, organ riffs,in the pocket bass and mental,acid-soaked guitar leads .
This rarest of This Turkish platter is currently in the place you'd least expect.(DOUG MOSUROCK)
Mustafa Özkent is an old prolific Turkish musician, still making records today, but long forgotten and swept over in the west.In 1973 he released a churming album of funky instrumental pop and jazz numbers called 'Genclik ile elele',that when unearthed from obscurity, probably made the musical archeologists over at the Finders Keepers label cream It's that kind of album, one that endlessly plods along, riding some kind of uniwersal groove that crosses boundaries and borders just to get you moving.(KEITH KAWAI-TINY MIX TAPES)
THE TEENAGERS.
rhythm'n seul,blues'n jazz,rock'n pop''c'est effectivement un formidablé mélange de tous ces genres qui est ici réalisé par Özkent,le tout étant méle a des mélodies Anatoliens;il est donc difficile de départager tel ou tel morceau puisqu'ils s'enchainent les uns aux autres pour un plaisir toujours renouvelé ou,ici,L'orgue est funky a mort,la,la basse claque a fond et ailleurs,les guitares sont orientalistes en diable;
