A NOTE FROM MISMATCH GAME HOST AND CREATOR, DENNIS HENSLEY:
My love affair with The Match Game began in the 70’s when I was but a wee lad. I’d watch all the regulars—Charles, Brett, Richard, Gene and the gang—and think, ‘Wow, being a grown-up is going to be so much fun. I’m going to drink martinis and make dirty jokes with my hilarious, well-dressed friends.’ The Match Game made adulthood look sophisticated and fun.
Around the same time the Game Show Network started rerunning the old episodes, I decided that I’d throw my own Match Game in honor of my birthday. I rented out Pedro’s Grill in Los Feliz, which, sadly, is no more, invited my funniest friends to impersonate celebrities and made up silly questions about people like Mariah Carey. Then we all just improvised. I knew it was going to be a night to remember when Kathy Griffin as Brett Somers replied to the first question—
Cruise ship singer Tony Tripoli said, ‘The passengers on this ship are so old, coming offstage I almost tripped on a BLANK-
with the unforgettable answer, ‘Bucket of jizz.’
It turned out to be a recurring theme.
After another fun outing in 2000 at the nightclub Oil Can Harry’s, The MisMatch Game found a home at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center’s Renberg Theater. All proceeds raised from the events go to benefit the Center and its programs. So far the show has raised around $45,000.
Some of the ridiculously talented performers who have appeared so far include Jack Plotnick as Evie Harris, Tony Tripoli as Charles Nelson Reilly, Jennifer Elise Cox as Elaine Joyce, Patrick Bristow as Nancy Culp, the Virgin Mary and Tim Gunn, Kali Rocha as Goldie Hawn, Tom Lenk as Heidi Klum, Julie Brown as Medusa and Tanya Harding, Sam Pancake as Lisa Whelchel and Brett Somers, Madeline Long as Shelley Winters, Ted Biaselli as Miss Piggy, Michael Airington as Paul Lynde and Marcia Wallace as herself!
So far, the show’s been a big hit. The Advocate even called The MisMatch Game one of the Ten Best Performances of the Year.
