My Story

I am a Grandma who loves technology.  Most people think this is only for kids or young adults, but hey, the internet is for everyone, no matter what age, race, or gender.

Actually I wrote my first computer program in 1963.  That's right, way back then when not many people even knew what a computer was.  I have to thank my high school in Des Moines, Iowa for having a school board who were visionary and provided students this opportunity.

I'll never forget that morning when I went to the student assembly and they announced a new course called "Computer Programming".  Of 500 kids sitting there, can you believe that I was the only one who signed up for it!  We had two boys transfer in from other high schools in the city making the starting class consist of two teachers and 3 students.

Talk about a paradigm shift.  Once I started my computer programming classes, my whole life changed.  I felt like I was part of the future, could really do something with my life, and had something to look forward to.

I took these classes for 3 hours a day for two full school years.  Now it was graduation time and since no college was teaching this, I decided to join the work force.  After all I had two years of training.

To my surprise, I could not get a job as a Computer Programmer.  Everywhere I went; doors were shut in my face.  Was it because I was not qualified? No. Was it because I was too young? No.  Was it because I did not have a college degree? No. I know it seems impossible to believe, but it was because I was a female.  I was told at insurance companies, banks, trucking firms, publishing firms, everywhere I went, that programming was a man's field, no women allowed.  Women could be hired as key punch operators, or run one of those card sorting and interpreting machines, but not to operate the computer or  certainly not be a programmer! I guess this was my first taste of rejection, I didn't like it.

Finally I got a small insurance company to, what they termed “take a chance”, and hire me.  Not as a Computer Programmer which was what I was trained for, but as a Computer Operator.  But at least it was a start.

WOW, 40 years later, I can't believe where the time has went!

So 40+ years later and I’m still in the computer industry, of course today they call it IT.  It took years to finally get into programming. Today, a college degree is needed to advance up in the ranks and I don't have any of those initials behind my name.  In the mean time, what I've discovered about myself is that what I really like is helping people be all that they can be.

Let's slip back in time for a minute, there must be more to this story!

As a child, my mom, was always a go getter, always trying get ahead.  When I was around 8, she got into selling stuff at home parties.  She sold pots and pans, jewelry, clothes.  The clothes were my favorite (NOT) as I would have to go with her to help carry 5 big plastic bags full of clothes that everyone at the party would try on.  There were men, women, and children clothing in those bags.  I didn’t mind carrying in the bags as much as I hated folding all those dang clothes and putting them back into the bags at the end of the party while my mom wrote up orders.

An interesting thing happened to my Mom in the late 1950’s that probably changed my life forever.  I was around 13 and she was now selling vitamins.  One day she went to a big meeting in Chicago.  At the meeting these guys got up and announced that they wanted to add other products to the vitamin line, soap products.  They also wanted to change the name of the company and presented a new way to earn income.  They called it Multi-Level Marketing.  She said there was a big uproar, but in the end, she came home from Chicago, a distributor of Amway products.

I learned all about what today we call the Network Marketing industry and how to leverage income by building a team of people.  You know, if you have a team of 100 people and each works 10 hours a week, you could get paid for 1,000 hrs of work. An income revolution was born that still is going strong today.  What I love most about this industry is being a part of and watching, lives change.  Yes friend, being able to help fulfill dreams and see people grow and become confident leaders is what this industry is really all about.

I also learned about residual income.  Money you earn over and over for just doing something once.  Like your typical insurance agent.  He sets you up with a policy once and every time you pay your premium, he earns money, year after year after year. How many years have you been paying on your car or house insurance?

Could a thick 78 record have a strong impact on a life?

The most important thing I learned as a child was self-esteem and believing I could do anything I set my mind on.  You see, back then, my mom got motivational instruction from records! Yep, great big thick 78 records that our whole family listened to over and over again and again on the record player.  Fifty years later and I can still hear in my head, that man on the record saying that I should ‘Hold my head up high and walk like a thoroughbred”, like I was going somewhere, like I was somebody.

Needless to say, my life was changed forever.  I saw the vision, believed in the principle, and most of all saw the freedom that could be attained.  Free to be your own boss, free to get out of the job rat race, free to work from home, free to be a leader just because you can and not because someone thinks you can or can’t.

My mom is over 80 now, living alone, driving and looking as young as me.  When we travel together, people hear me call her mom, and say "that can't be your mom". She gets a kick out of that. Be sure and take a look at the pictures of her on our Maui trip.

At 60, is it too late to chase a dream?
CALLING ALL BABY BOOMERS.

Let's be friends!

I'd like to be your friend.  Are we a match?  If so, email or send me a comment.

See that NO HYPE picture above? Here is the deal, I needed to start my own business so that I would have extra income coming in during retirement. The health insurance and life insurance costs were going to cause me to have to wait to retire longer than I wanted. Can any of you identify with that? Anyway, a friend told me about the new Z2R Wealth Matrix. I took a look and decided to take the next step.
Since I care about you and your retirement dreams, I'm inviting you to TAKE A LOOK. You might like what you see like I did. Click on the Z2R Wealth Matrix banner on the left of my page.
