Born in Georgia, the vastly experienced Kakha Kaladze started his career at Dinamo Tblisi but came to prominence at Dynamo Kiev. He moved to Kiev in January 1998 and spent two-and-a-half successful seasons there, gaining valuable Champions League experience in the process. A mainstay of the Georgia national side, Milan beat a number of other big name sides, including Manchester United, to Kaladze's signature in January 2001. Attracted by his versatility - Kaladze plays left-back but is also comfortable on the left side of midfield or in the heart of defence - Milan played him in a number of roles before handing him the left-back berth and he prospered there, featuring regularly in the Serie A and Champion's League winning campaign of 2002/3. He was injured for much of 2003/4 but returned to full fitness in the subsequent season, although Paolo Maldini's return to left-back limited him to just19 league appearances. Kaladze turned out regularly in the 2005/6 season, racking up 28 league appearances.
