The first concert I attended was the Beatles when they played in Kansas City. I was in the 6th grade and my Dad bought tickets on the 10th row right in the middle and let me take two friends. That did it, I had a serious case of Beatlemania. So serious that I dressed up like a Beatle with three other girls in my Camp Fire Girls group and pantomimed them for women’s meetings that one of the girls mother would book us into. My first band!In the 60s I was a hippie. I love to tell those stories to my audiences. Some remember what I’m talking about. Some are much too young but are fascinated with that time. When I saw the Washington DC scene in the movie Forrest Gump, I thought to myself "I was there!!" And I had been, with a vanload of kindred spirits; I went to D.C. for the Moratorium in 1971. The van kept getting smaller and smaller as we picked up hitchhikers on their way to shut down the United States government with us. When we accidentally knocked out the passenger window of the van coming into a gas station somewhere in Pennsylvania, it threatened to slow us down; none of us had money to fix it. Then a man in a Cadillac who happened to be there getting gas and watching as 10 or so hippies wandered around scratching their heads, offered to pay for the window. He believed in what we were doing but couldn’t go to D.C. himself.
7000 people were arrested at that demonstration but luckily, we weren’t in that group.I started playing in bands when I was 24. I played a variety of music from rock to bluegrass in and around Kansas City for 15 years as a singer/keyboard-player. The highlight of those years was an album (yes, vinyl) released in 1986 of original rock/alternative music with a band called ON MARS.When I moved to Atlanta in 1990 I decided to play guitar and wanted to do a solo or duo acoustic act. On my birthday at a karaoke bar I sang a song with a co-worker, Diane Otte. My son told me we sounded great together so the next day at work I asked her if she wanted to form a duo. We played Atlanta and surrounding states for the next 5 years as Delilah. My first release On a Planet where it Rains includes many of the songs I wrote during that time and though I did my own harmonies on the CD, the sound is very much like Delilah. My next CD has just been released. LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR is very organic, sonically, and a great CD to pop in for a drive. Jim Wood, the producer was a 5 time Tennessee State Fiddle Champ and plays anything with strings like no one else. I had planned to put some of my friends’ songs on this CD but Jim didn’t agree, so they’ll go on the next one...already in the works. You can buy either CD on CDBaby or drop me an email and I’ll tell you how to get a signed copy! Enjoy.
