Sandra Lynn Sparks

About Me

Singer, harper, songwriter, lyricist, improvisationist - Sandra has performed with the groups Greenway Sparks and An Drasda, with the Georgia Renaissance Festival, The Atlanta Shakespeare Company, and at many Celtic festivals in the East. Among her most memorable memories: performing on Barra, Outer Hebrides, during the Clan MacNeil Gathering of 1987; with the ASC in Shakespeare's Globe Theater, August 1995; and sitting in (among other musicians) with the Chieftains during two of their Atlanta appearances. Her signature music is a type called freesong: improvised vocal music without real words, focusing on feeling rather than meaning.Enjoy a look at her video, with the songTwa Corbies

What we do (The Chieftains)

It was over a decade ago. The Chieftains were going to be playing at the Fox, and a piece appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution: the Chieftains were inviting local trad players to join them ons...

Iain McLachlan

I think I was always afraid to know, but finally steeled myself to take a look on the Internet: yes, he died in 1995. I found an obituary here: http://www.footstompin.com/articles/celtic_music_heroes/...

Why freesong?

Why do I sing freesong instead of tradtional Gaelic music, since old style   singing is so important to me? I have learned Gaelic songs, and listen a good deal to the Gaelic singin...

Holding the Flute Player’s Hand

I learned about the story of a traditional Irish singer holding the hand of a flute player on order to take in the music and pass it on while I was studying with Margaret Bennett and Niamh Parson...

Music in the Blood

If you haven't noticed by now,  most of my music doesn't have a true language: it's something  I have called freesong. When I create it, it is improvised, but a number of the pieces I either...

Pirate Palooza was a wonderful time!

What was Pirate Palooza? A family reunion, bigger than ever, as much as a good party. I almost made it to midnight, but couldn't go any further. Good to see a lot of old friends, hear a lot of fun mus...

New Song, Gaia

I will switch out my four tunes from time to time; at least one will be switched each week. This week: out with the sad Dark Garden, in with the happy freesong Gaia, as I go off to meet with frie...

Listening to my friends

I am having a quiet night at home after a busy few days, just going through and listening to my friends here play and sing. I grew up a loner kid in a house where my mother was an invalid, my fat...
