About Me

Dimthingshine - 1989

DIMTHINGS played drums in prog art and alt rock, free-form jazz, etc.. Did solo exhibitions compared to "animal of the Muppets". He experimented in electronic and avant-garde sound forms Ala. musique concrete at a youthful age from the 1970’s through the next couple of decades. He released his own albums and tapes (Do-It-Yourself or DIY), performing and producing most of the compositions, improvisations, songs. He released 3 Double LPs (last of which never actually got released), and 4 garage recording LPs between 1982-1986, as well as some side projects. Music was an outlet to express his youthful rebellious energy.
Instigated by the prophetic "Bill the Poet", the addition of the "hine" extended his artist name from "Dimthings" to “Dimthingshine” as a symbolic revelation after feeling alienated in his local music scene. The name Dimthingshine signified more balance… “from subtle darkness there is light”
DIMTHINGSHINE released various low fi recordings on cassette and became active in the independent home taping underground network during the Mid – Later 1980's. He also contributed articles, interviews, reviews for small independent underground magazines.
Towards the end of the 1980’s into the 1990’s Dimthingshine began to break away from creative ventures & playing to explore life outside the umbrella of music.
All the many DTS sound documented releases have since been out of print. Fortunately they are slowing being re-mastered and made available on CD through Thingsflux Music label.

His band "Scraping Teeth" won the Worst Band in America award for Spin Magazine in the start of the 1990's. Some of these live performances were documented and made available on 2 separate CD’s from Thingsflux Music label.

They're No Good. Miami band Scraping Teeth receives Spin magazine's "Broken Record Award" after being named Worst Band in America by the magazine. (1993) The presentation took place after the band's showcase at New York's CBGB, which featured such tunes as "Torture And Stuff" and "Death By Refrigerator." DIMTHINGSHINE - TALES FROM LIMBOLAND

Will make an audio sample available on myspace soon.

The first official Dimthingshine recording (in 16 years) just completed early January 2008. It includes collaborations with Paul Lemos (Controlled Bleeding), Astro (Hiroshi Hasegawa) with his power electronics, Brian Bridges with his microtone wav form experiments.

"I consider this the follow up to my last release in 1992. It has the same aggressive energy and sonic emotional timbres. Dark horror show mixed with humor, rebellion, and revolution."

The music combines surreal interludes, musique-concrete, industrial avant-garde/rock/beat, Zappaesque sweeps, Bali/Tibetan themes, odd free form improvisations, referential associations, and shear madness.

His last solo effort in the early 1990's was more industrial – experimental – avant-garde prog was recorded between 1989-1991 and finally made available on CD through Thingsflux Music. See CD Releases for Sale. It is called Alive In The Crypt, the unreleased 1992 solo project under DIMTHINGSHINE.

Band Members: James Edward Garcia is the band. Once went by the name DIMTHINGS and eventually modified it to DIMTHINGSHINE
Influences: Too many styles, references to try and pick influences. The later (talking end 80’s through early 90’s) Dimthingshine material got a little bit darker, experimental industrial electronic with humor and prog rock elements, Descriptions below taken from reviews of Dimthings releases:

“reminding me of a cross between Mahavishnu (at their most frenzied), This Heat, Fred Lane, and the Residents”

“Dimthings goes from fairly normal material into the most extreme Musique Concrete”

“Some of this is the sort of garage-produced music concrete that many bands (like Negativland) create.”

“they stretch the music into weird new shapes; like The Residents meet The Art Ensemble of Chicago. If your collection includes stuff like Negativland, Walls Of Genius, and releases from the L.A.F.M.S. then this is for you.”

“It's definitely jazz-like, somewhat like Hugh Hopper or Tony Williams Lifetime, but toss in Sun Ra (played at 78) and a few dashes of Material, the Residents, and even Negativland.”

“Some cuts here owe a debt early burnin' Mahavishnu Orchestra and the best of Return To Forever”

“It's representative o' the branch of unusual noise that smarter college musicians turn to when they realize that Zappa's square.”

“Ornette Coleman/DECODING SOCIETY territory of odd time signatures and liberated rhythm sections.”
“early Residents-style distortion”
“Included is one of the best renditions of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious" that I've heard.”

“Many artist come to mind in this piece; early Zappa, Residents, Angloncan, Skeleton Crew, Phillip Glass, Gustav Holst, and you might hear many others.”

“Brave consumer will be treated in gamutful fashion, dosed and doused with all manner of offbeat, from orchestrated tape loopery, playful jazzfunk, stark urban voodoo and Satiesque musings. Undefinable admixture of strains from free bebop to Residential pop attitudes.”

“There are a lot of light moments where the keyboard melodies play off the percussion and vice versa. Much like Zappa does.”
