My Top 10 Rap Albums of All Time
1 - Aesop Rock's - Labor Days
I don't care how many times, how frequently, how carefully you listen to this album, every time you listen it gets deeper and deeper. Aesop flows poetically through everyday life as he sees it. It's entertainment at its best.
2 - IMP's - Back in the Days
Heard Scandalous in the late 80s and thought it was dope but didn't know or remember who it was. About 5 years later bought this random bay area rap album not thinking too much of it. Heard that track and almost flipped my wig. First song to last song… every track is gangster… every track knocks. IMP knew how to sample gangster rap classics (NWA, DJ Quik, and more) but still keep it unique. Cougnut's deep ass voice reminded you he was as thuggish as it gets. RIP Cougnut.
3 - Master P's - Ghetto Dope
Master P equals my college years. Cutting edge dope beats, it symbolizes bay area beats and rap at its climb of popularity. Always a trunk rattler with clean bass lines. P always had the ability to keep his rap gangster and funny at the same time. Thank you dope fiends for your support!
4 - Eminem's - Marshall Mathers LP
Have to give it up to Eminem for this album. Entertaining all the way through. His usual unique rhyme schemes kept the album very original. Some dark tracks, some serious tracks, some light-hearted tracks… it's a unique blend of everything you want on a rap album. I think this album alone made Dr. Dre one of the best beat-makers of all time…. ERVERYONE jocked him for beats after this one.
5 - DJ Quik's - Safe & Sound
Pimp shit! This absolutely entertaining album had fresh, unique beats that DJ Quik himself contributed heavily to. Lyrics and themes are funny as fuck. Playerism at its finest.
6 - Compton's Most Wanted - Music to Driveby
Mixed together fast tracks and slower smooth perfectly. Front to back this album is the shit. Pure gangster ass themes. Jyeah!
7 - TRU's – TRUE
P, C-Murder, and Silkk produced head nodder after head nodder on this album. As usual, P kept it gangster and humorous at the same time. I think this qualifies as the best road-trip album of all time… as long as everyone knows the lyrics ;)
8 - Mac Mall's - Illegal Business
This is the album we'd cruise to on Santa Clara!!! Kayree drop some dope on these fools… and he did! With a total bay sound, this album contains hits from front to back. Mac Mall's raps were very street… and at times showed street smarts. Classic!
9 - N.W.A.'s – Straight Outta Compton
An all time classic. Beginnings of gangster rap. From Dre's beats and rap, to Cube's gangster ass flow, to Eazy's pimp a bitch mentality, this album was and still is truly funky.
10 - Brand Nubian's - In God We Trust
As a teenager, Brand Nubian was my group. They were the first to be named "my favorite rappers". Representing the only old school east coast hip hop of the past on my list, this album is an educated look at the world (at least it was in the early 90s).
