“Music is my boyfriend”, Sonia Moore blurted out laughing on the phone from her California home on the one of the hottest days of summer 2007. “Sometimes it’s beautiful, sometimes it’s difficult but it always amazes me and keeps me wanting more”.An electrifying positive energy is channeled through the phone lines when speaking to the vibrant soul singer from Santa Clarita. It’s hard not to smile and get caught up in her lust for life. Her music omits the same vibe. From melodic hooky soulful tales to hip hop inspired jams, Sonia Moore’s music is a blend of influences that span far beyond musical ones. “I am really influenced by many things around me- things ranging from muscle cars, fashion, karate movies, skating, basketball and video games”. When it comes to fashion, what I like is very much how I mix and blend melodies and rhythms in my music. I feel equally as comfortable putting together gear from thrift shops to Prada, and when it comes to writing, I am equally psyched to throw in a hip hop beat with old school guitar riffs and a beautiful melody laced on top”.The Sonia Moore musical experience, dates back to her childhood when she starting singing in church at age six. Her “oneness” with music became more apparent as she got older and started writing her own songs. Her lyrical take on things has a unique down to earth quality. “I like using imagery in my words but I’m not afraid to be blunt if I’m writing a song about my boyfriend who has a drinking problem and is messing things up”, she says with a playful tone referring to her song, “Alcoholic” which is a chilled jam that contains the hook from the Lena Horne classic, “Stormy Weather”. Sonia considers herself to be a portal in the creative process. “Music takes me to places I never thought I could go. Sometimes when I listen back to material or read the lyrics, I ask myself, “Whoa where did that come from?” It’s all very spiritual to me and I go by my intuition when collaborating with other writers and producers. If I feel strongly about a piece of music, I will fight for it and not give up”. That creative intuition has lead her to work with some of today’s most cutting edge producers such as Flip Matrix (Young Rich and Gangsta) and more recently, Darryl Swann, known for his organic production with Macy Gray.Sonia Moore’s artistic prowess is further showcased in her live show. Her vocal delivery is powerful but soft when it needs to be, all fitting within the boundaries of the stories she is telling. “When it comes to performing live, I thrive on the energy from my live band- I’m real old school in that sense. When I’m up there and the band is kicking, the audience better strap themselves in”.Fresh off an award win for, “Best Female Performer”, at the Los Angeles Black Music Awards in 2006, the beautiful Sonia Moore is ready to be unleashed to the rest of the world. “I wanna have ‘em dancing to my joints in their Chuck Taylor’s in Tokyo, chillin’ to my beats in their Timberland’s in London, and singin’ to my words in Brooklyn- wherever people want to hear my music, I want to be there to share it with them…shaaaaa!”.Sonia Moore is currently thrilled to be working on her debut album.
