Backstage at Ska Is Dead IV Denver Show:

Influences: SKA IS DEAD HISTORY:

On Tuesday February 17, 2004, 3 bands, Big D & the Kids Table, Mustard Plug and the Planet Smashers got on stage in front of 400 kids in Buffalo NY and performed the very first gig on the very first Ska Is Dead Tour. Three years, and 140 shows later, the tour has gone beyond all expectations, selling over 55,000 tickets in 3 different countries and proving that indeed, ska is not dead. The tour started out to prove just that. At a time when retail had forgotten the genre and most live venues had only marginal faith, the tour was put together on the simple principal that ska is as valid as it ever was it just needed to be rebuilt from the grass roots on up.

The first Ska Is Dead Tour featured the previously mentioned bands as well as co-headliners Catch 22 and began to sew the seeds to 20,000 fans tour-wide. Ska Is Dead 2 went out in January of 2005 and featured skacore veterans Voodoo Glow Skulls, Midwest third wave pioneers, MU330 and fan favorites Streetlight Manifesto. The tour built on the success of SID1 and sold out many of the shows including such high profile venues as the Metro in Chicago and Starland Ballroom in NJ.

Ska is Dead 3 continued the success of the first two tours, this time featuring the most established North American ska band in history, NYC’s The Toasters as well as the cream of today’s up and coming national ska bands, such as Hawaii’s Go Jimmy Go, Boston’s Westbound Train, and Toronto’s The Flatliners along with Ska Is Dead veterans Mustard Plug, The Planet Smashers.

In December of 2006 Ska is Dead finally jumped across the pond and completed 10 successful shows in the UK and Ireland. Along the way the tour has garnered favorable press in places like Amp Magazine, Pollstar Online, Glorious Noise Online, Livedaily.com, etc. and reinvigorated the scene worldwide.

To document and commemorate this success, Ska Is Dead: the Cd compilation was released in July of 2007 and featured 23 of the most important bands performing in the genre. From the laid back Jamaican sounds of Hawaii’s Go Jimmy Go to the aggressive ska-core of Miami’s Against All Authority, from newcomers like Bomb the Music Industry to legends like Fishbone and pretty much everything in between, this compilation represents the best of a very dynamic scene, one that is back on the upswing and proving that ska will never die. The Cd was released in the U.S. on Asian Man Records, in Canada on Stomp Records, in Europe by Household Name Records and Japan by Ska In The World
Record Label: Asian Man/Stomp/Household Name/Ska In the World/
Type of Label: Indie
