Both candidates were WWII veterans representative of the " greatest generation " - the first presidential candidates/nominees born in the 20th century. Kennedy & Nixon were very competitive & highly respected candidates. John Kennedy & Richard Nixon started their political careers at the same time - both were elected to the Congress in 1946.
