I live in Sunny San Diego home to Ocean, Mountains and Desert. Theres a place I like to go when I need a reality check. It's called Casa Beach. This place humbles me like no other.
On the other side of the walkway there is a beach that is home to over 200 harbor seals. They are a near shore species of marine mammal of the order of pinnipedia and are the most docile and least vocal of all pinnipeds. They are an integral part of the marine environment. They need to haul-out (lay out) of water on dry land every day in order to survive. This very small beach is where the mature females give birth to their pups. They give birth to one pup each year. Birthing season is February through April. Harbor seal pups nurse on their mothers milk for 1 to 2 months before they are weaned. From June to August they molt (shed all of their fur. Their average life span is 20-25 years. Harbor seals can be seen year round at this beach. It is rare for harbor seals to choose a haul-out site so close to humans, making this a rare and natural treasure. But really, the seals have no other location to give birth.
This is the only rookery between Mexico and Northern California. The seals have been driven away from all other beaches because of human encroachment. People are claiming that the seals cause pollution which is untrue. Seals are a natural part of the marine environment. The only pollution that has been done to this beach has been caused by humans. We have so many beautiful beaches along our coastline that it seems wrong on so many levels to take this one from the seals. Children only come to Casa Beach to see the harbor seals. They could care less about swimming on that particular small beach. Hundreds of children have even signed petitions to try to stop the city from destroying the beach and scaring away the seals. But do you think the city listened to the children that they say they are doing this for?
The San Diego City Council ignored the municipal code that protects all animals on San Diego beachesThey removed the rope barriers protecting the seals, making the beach a shared beach. Since then, seals have been stabbed, beaten, kicked, and harassed. Causing some females to go into premature labor. People even let their dogs down there to let them sniff and bark at the seals to scare them all back into the ocean. Now the City has voted to dredge the sand from the beach which will cost taxpayers thousand of dollars and will drive the seals from the area for good. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration is supposed to enforce the Marine Mammal Protection Act and they failed to do so. That allowed the City Council to make decisions that would be in violation of the California Fish and Game Code, California Environment Policy Act and the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Basically laws are being violated at the Federal, State and City levels.
Please check out the link below. It has 5 pre-made letters that can be sent to our State Assembly Members. All you have to do is Copy, Paste, Sign and mail it. In order for us to get Mayor Dick Murphy and City Council Woman Donna Frye involved in this environmental issue we need to be noticed. We need as many people as possible to send them a letter.
