Sunnydale, California, is the fictional suburban setting for the U.S. television drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Series creator Joss Whedon conceived the town as a representation of the typical, anonymous, generic suburban city, as well as a narrative parody of the all-too-serene towns typical in traditional horror movies...
Sunnydale itself
Sunnydale's size and surroundings are implausible, as it was designed largely for comic effect and narrative convenience. During the first three seasons, Sunnydale was depicted as a small California town: population of 38 500, very few high schools, 43 churches, a small private college, a zoo, a museum and one modest main street. Even so, it had 12 gothic cemeteries. These cemeteries are so heavily used that services are sometimes held at night.
In later seasons it was revealed that Sunnydale sported a campus of the University of California system, and a profitable magic supply shop. The town was also seen to include a large park containing a creek and a lake, as well as a large cemetery adjacent to a lake.
Sunnydale has a train station, a bus station, a small airport, and a small military base. Sunnydale also holds some historical buildings...
Directly beneath Sunnydale High School is an entrance to the Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal that attracts evil like a magnet. This functions as a major plot device in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as it explains why vampires and other demons are so prevalent in Sunnydale.
Sunnydale possesses many common horror-movie characteristics, such as an abundance of dark alleyways, abandoned mansions and factories, and an inexplicable divide between its demon-fighting, supernaturally aware teens and the sinister or clueless, perpetually in-denial adults.
By the year 2002, the population had fallen to 32,900. In 2003 the town was almost completely evacuated before its destruction.
Sunnydale's surroundings
Sunnydale is somewhat isolated, and is not adjacent to other urban or suburban areas.
The town is adjacent to several acres of woods and forest, including Miller's Woods. Breaker's Woods is 45-minute drive from town.
Sunnydale is not very far from the Pacific Ocean. An ocean port with several docked ships is nearby. Nearby, Kingman's Bluff stands on a tall cliff overlooking the sea. There is a nearby beach.
Near (or in) Sunnydale is an old "quarry" house built beside a deep lake, which is a few feet drop from a cliff edge. There is also a hydroelectric dam either in Sunnydale or in its immediate vicinity.
A short drive from Sunnydale there is a desert.
In the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer ("Chosen"), and also in the first issue of the Buffy: Season Eight comic book, Sunnydale is shown as being in the middle of the desert. This appears to contradict the facts earlier established about Sunnydale's surroundings... ;oP
Byffy (full nam,Buffy Anne Summers) and her mother, Joyce, moved to 1630 Revello Drive, Sunnydale, California, from Los Angeles, California, following Buffy’s expulsion from Hemery High School for having burned down the school’s gymnasium in a fight against local vampires. Buffy’s friends, Xander Harris and Willow Rosenberg, were frequent visitors to the Summers' home, as was Buffy’s fellow slayer, Faith Lehane, and Buffy's boyfriend, the vampire Angel. Classmate Cordelia Chase also occasionally visited, as did Buffy's Watcher, Rupert Giles.
In season five, Buffy’s sister Dawn Summers joined Buffy and her mother as a resident in the house. After Joyce’s death, the house's occupants included (at various times) Willow and Tara, Giles, ex-demon Anya Jenkins, Amy Madison (while in rat form and briefly afterwords) reformed vampire Spike, reformed villain Andrew Wells, and several Potential Slayers. The house was their headquarters in the war against the First Evil and its henchmen.
Sunnydale High School is located in Sunnydale of course, it competes with Fondren High ("Some Assembly Required"). It was headed by Principal Bob Flutie early in the first season. After he was eaten in "The Pack", a strict Principal Snyder took over on the recommendation of Mayor Richard Wilkins. The Master rose in the season finale after the Sunnydale High School library showed itself to be on top of the Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal that attracts evil like a magnet.
There was also a library... Rupert Giles was conveniently the librarian, and Buffy and her Scooby Gang usually hang there and strategize. The school football team are the Razorbacks and wear maroon and yellow.

Season three ended with a bang -- Principal Snyder was eaten by the Mayor-cum-demon before the latter was blown up along with the entire school building by Rupert Giles. It is possible that the boast made by the Class of 1999 at their prom -- that the graduating class had the lowest mortality rate in Sunnydale history -- went with the explosives. After its ruins lay for a while, Xander Harris helped rebuild it by season seven -- the Principal's office is now directly over the Hellmouth -- only for it to be sucked into a giant hole along with an empty Sunnydale in the battle with the First Evil.
In the fourth season episode "Doomed" the Scooby Gang (now at College) go back to the burnt down school to defeat demons trying to destroy the world. The burnt out school is also featured in Season 5 when Willow and Tara look for Riley.
The Bronze was depicted primarily as a coffee bar that hosts live music and serves as a nightclub. By season three, it became clear that The Bronze has a liquor license, although the scoobys and others were still usually seen drinking cappuccinos or hot chocolate... ;o)While the drinking age in California is 21, it's generally ignored in the show other than when it's needed as part of the story. Some bartenders at The Bronze will not serve young people drinks without ID.[3] The episode "Something Blue" in season four has Willow pining after Oz and dancing drunk. A bottle of beer rolls away from her, leading Xander and Buffy to discover her drunkenness--Buffy reprimands her, reminding her of her own *fun* foray into drinking in the episode "Beer Bad". However, no consequences come directly from Willow's drinking. In one episode of season five, Dawn had to wear a wristband indicating that she was underage, but this must have been a temporary rule at The Bronze, because it never happened again. Moreover, Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Tara did not have to wear wristbands, even though they were only twenty years old at the time
That The Bronze plays live music is not only used as a plot device for Oz's band Dingoes Ate My Baby but also as a subtle means for the production team to showcase new bands from the Los Angeles area, as well as more well known artists and bands such as Aimee Mann, Splendid, Cibo Matto, Angie Hart, Michelle Branch and Nerf Herder.
Thank you "Mr Wilipedia".... lol
