About Me

Carolina Esteves-Flamenco dancer.Born into a Spanish family in Buenos Aires, Carolina started her dance studies at a young age when she attended classes at her local dance school. She studied ballet, drama, contemporary dance and tango until finally moved to Madrid for five years to pursue intensive studies with some of the great names of flamenco-China, La Truco, Bélen Fernández, Yolanda Heredia in Amor de Dios and Rafaela Carrasco, Manolo Liñan, Juan Polvillo and La Chiqui in Jerez de la Frontera. Carolina has an extensive background in all aspects of dance, from traditional tablao flamenco to contemporary dance and street experimental flamenco. In Madrid, as well as working on various physical theatre projects with choreographer and dancer Camille Hanson (Mujeres en movimiento, Mujeres y me) Carolina performed regularly with the flamenco fusion band ‘Siete a contra’. They made a great impact on the local flamenco scene of the late1990s and the group was a springboard for future projects and a great school for their members who later on became acclaimed artists who continue to work internationally. She moved back to London in 2003 and founded ‘Sumaya Flamenco’ with guitarist Steve Homes and singer Ulises Diaz Ropero. In 2004 she took part in Taranta by the Neighbourhood Stilts International Company which was commissioned by the Arts Council of England and Stockton International Festival. The piece was choreographed and performed by Carolina Esteves, Miriam Faura and Raul Calderon. Carolina also appeared in Resolution 2006 at The Place in Frida by Miriam Faura. With a unique talent for diversity, Carolina has taken her versatile performing art to different audiences in Spain, Italy, Argentina and the UK. She is now teaching and performing regularly in London with: 'Sumaya Flamenco'at London tablaos and music venues (Viva Viva, The Ritzy, The Cross Kings)theatres (The Cut, Norwich Playhouse) festivals (Glastonbury, Global Local, Future Cinema) and Peñas Flamencas.Sefarad: Sefarad is a journey into exile and immigration. An exploration of Hispanic traditions such as Ladino and Sefaradic music, Flamenco and Latin American rhythms, triggered by a Diaspora through diversity and cultural mix. Using Flamenco and Ladino as perfect examples of cultural fusion, the artists involved in this project understand the power of diversity and celebrate immigration as the ultimate creative power.
