Mess Age

About Me

Mess Age came into being in 1998 in Gdansk (Poland). Before creating MESS AGE the people who create band played only in amateur bands (ALIENATOR and AGE CRISIS). At the very beginning the band consisted of six members:
* RAFAL KAWALEROWSKI- vocal
* JOANNA PASZKE- vocal
* ALEX KOPCZYNSKI- guitar
* SYLWESTER RYBCZYK- guitar
* ANDRZEJ OSMALEK- bass
* DOMINIK KOLODZIEJCZAK- drums
This crew recorded three demo cassettes
* 'RESURRECTION'- October 1998
* 'FALLEN'- July 1999
* 'REBORN'- March 2000
All of those cassettes were recorded by means of the band's own funds and, moreover, in June 1999 an official home page of the band was created, which substantially helped to gain some promotion. What is more, in October 1999 the band won the main prize on a festival in Starogard Gdanski. When recording the third demo cassette, MESS AGE started to cooperate with Piotr Lukaszewski who was to release band's records for a long period of time.
The demo cassettes did their best and the promotion appeared to be successful. MESS AGE gave a lot of concerts and they started to give more concerts outside Tricity. The band started to attract the interest of a few musical magazines. Two years of trails got result and MESS AGE began their first tour. The band played a part of 'VICTIM'S TOUR' together with the bands YATTERING and HATE. At the same time some compositions from demo cassettes found themselves on different kinds of compilations e.g in Poland 'Blood to Come' published with a magazine 'Trash'em All', and abroad e.g. in the U.S.A 'Mortuary Khage Prod.'. The songs of MESS AGE were played more often on radio such as 'Radiostacja' or 'Park Fm'. June 2000 brought the first official musical publisher 'Demonic Records' and that is why the demo 'Reborn' came out on a split together with SHADOWS LAND. Another huge achievement was distinction on an important festival in Chmielno. In September 2000 vocalist, Asia, left the band and since then she has supported a newly created band ASBEEL. Since that time MESS AGE has created compositions in a five-member-crew. Later, to everybody's surprise, the changing fortunes of MESS AGE and ASBEEL were significantly connected.
In September 2000 the band also organised THIRD MILLENIUM FESTIVAL in Gdansk during which they performed together with other bands such as CHRIST AGONY, DOMAIN, YATTERING, SCEPTIC, DEMISE, ETERNAL DEFORMITY, MEDEBOR and ECLYPSE. Moreover, in November 2000 Mess Age accompanied by the bands YATERING, SUPREME LORD, DECAPITATED, NYIA, set out on an enormous nation-wide (Polish) tour 'Dark Zone Tour 2000'. At the very end of the year 2000, MESS AGE won two first places in Internet magazine' 'Multum in Parvo' ranking between the most often downloaded compositions in mp3 format.
The year 2001 was marked by many concerts with bands such as ACID DRINKERS, TURBO, VADER, DECAPITATED and TRAUMA. In the meantime the band worked on compositions but this time they prepared material for a long-playing record. Vocalist Raaf worked on in PAINFUL JOY project, which resulted in the recording of a promo 'Existence from Impetus'. That group (PAINFUL JOY) plays thrash metal music with the elements of electronic sounds, which reminds the bands PAIN or THE KOVENANT.
The Conquer Record organised two main festivals on which MESS AGE performed together with the bands YATTERING, DAMNATION, WITCHMASTER, AZARATH, APRIL ETHEREAL, LUNA AD NOCTUM, MISTERIA and FAUST. At the end of the year 2001 the Conquer Record suggested recording the first long-playing album and also two next LPs. MESS AGE spent the January 2002 in a recording studio. The band created ten new compositions that the debut album 'Self-Convicted' consisted of. Piotr Lukaszewski worked on both the production and the realisation of the album.
The promotion of the debut album started. The time was marked by two important concerts: the first in Gdansk and the second in Katowice (Mega Club), and, what is more, in March MESS AGE set out on great European tour with the bands YATTERING, HELL-BORN, DEVILYN, IMMEMORIAL. MESS AGE visited Spain, France and Great Britain.
After the return of the band the date of issuing the album 'Self-Convicted' was fixed. The album was available in music shops since the beginning of July 2002. Between the return from the European tour the issuing of the album, MESS AGE finished working on the graphic design of the album and prepared promotion materials themselves.
As early as in March, they started another journey outside Poland. This time MESS AGE gave three performances before the concert of YATTERING in Great Britain and Belgium.
At the beginning of summer MESS AGE gave many local concerts. To add up, in autumn WINTER CRUSADE TOUR 2002 across Poland was held. It was accompanied by bands such as NECROPHOBIC, QUO VADIS, HELL-BORN, CORRUPTION and UNNAMED. All of concerts were deeply satisfying.
Once again, one of the newest compositions found itself on an official compilation, but this time it was 'The Ultimate Revenge' issued by Metal Mind Production. In November 2002, MESS AGE had a great pleasure to support the legendary Polish metal music band KAT, and, what is more after a few days MESS AGE warmed up the audience before the performances of bands such as FRONTSIDE and BEHEMOTH.
In January 2003 MESS AGE performed in Szczecin (Poland) together with the bands CORRUPTION and QUO VADIS. In February, MESS AGE celebrated their fifth anniversary and, in order to commemorate such an important event, they gave an unforgettable concert in 'Burdl' (community centre; Gdansk, Poland) together with invited bands: HELL-BORN, QUO VADIS, MEDEBOR, TEHACE and ASBEEL.
After the jubilee, the bassist Andrzej Osmalek unexpectedly left the band. It was a considerable loss, but as early as the next month the band found a praiseworthy successor Artur 'Marys' Olkowicz. The new compositions came into being with no delay, and MESS AGE could start to prepare a new set of concerts. At the turn of June and July the next visit to countries of Western Europe began. MESS AGE accompanied by YATTERING went to Scotland, England, Holland, Belgium, France and Switzerland.
After the tour MESS AGE set about refining and improving material for the new album. They also played a few concerts for instance in Szczecin (Poland) to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of a friendly band QUO VADIS.
The date of the recording of the second album was established on March 2004. Unfortunately, three weeks before the fixed date the Conquer Records had broken the contract. After the very promising beginnings of the co-operation between MESS AGE and its promoter, the Conquer Record left the band and MESS AGE had to cope with everything without any help. In spite of the difficulties, however, MESS AGE didn't resign from the booked studio and started looking for a new sponsor. To everybody's joy, the biggest Polish recording promoter METAL MIND RECORDS got interested in MESS AGE. They went through the usual formalities, which resulted in a brand new contract for three releases!
In May 2004 work on the second album "Crushed Inside" was finished. The premiere of the album was established on 28th June 2004. The album "Crushed Inside" was recorded in RADIO GDANSK STUDIO, it was mixed in Red Studio, and everything happened under Piotr Lukaszewski's critical eye. Piotr Lukaszewski played also the prominent role of the record producer. Krzysztof Iwin took charge of creating the album's cover and MMP (Metal Mind Production) guaranteed that the newest album would be sold in all the big distributions and musical chains.
In the meantime, the guitarist, just after recording his part at studio, left the band. Amber (Sylwester Rybczyk) played with MESS AGE for six years. His leaving wasn't a surprise because he decided to do so a few months before recordings. MESS AGE found a new guitarist Artur 'Gufi' Piotrowski who played in another band in Gdansk- Asbeel. The switch of the guitarists appeared to be a very good move, and the best proof of it was the fact that Gufi learnt the new material with lightning speed and he was almost immediately ready to give concerts together with MESS AGE e.g. on Ecological Summit in Zlotów (Poland).
The bassist 'Marys' worked with a friendly band DEAD BY DAWN and they recorded a promo together. At the same time MESS AGE had the pleasure to support the band KAT. Reviews from either foreign or Polish musical magazines started to pour in. The new album caught on well and, in most cases, it got very good marks. British magazine 'Power Play' honoured the album with a major review on ? of a page, and what is more, two other British magazines: 'Metal Blade' and 'Metal Parade' gave it 9 out of 10 and 10 out of 10 points for the new album 'Crushed Inside'.
The year 2004 went on with promoting the new album, mainly by concerts, and with creating new compositions. The band also prepared a project for the cover of the next album 'Rejected Burden', but this time the texts, the title of the album and the cover were planned to be a concept album. The bassist, Marys, together with the band DBD recorded the band's debut album, which was promoted by Conquer Rec.- a former promoter of MESS AGE. In September 2004 the band was on nation-wide tour DIVINE PERDITION TOUR 2004 and played twelve concerts together with bands such as TRAUMA and TOXIC BONKERS.
In January 2005 Mess Age gave more concerts e.g. with ANGOR in 'Ucho' (music club, Gdynia, Poland), later a charity concert in favour of the ill vocalist of the band TOTEM. The bands YATTERING, MESS AGE, CHASSIS and PSYCHOLLYWOOD took part in the charity concert as well.
On the 12th of March 2005 MESS AGE appeared on a festival METALMANIA in 'Spodek' (music club, Katowice, Poland). In June 2005 MESS AGE started to record their third album 'REJECTED BURDEN' (again in STUDIO REDIO GDANSK, and again with Piotr Lukaszewski). The band was fully prepared and enthusiastic. The album was recorded with neither delay nor problems. 'Live' instruments and hard, selective sounds were to be the band's trump of the newest compositions. The help of electronic equipment was limited to minimum in order to achieve intended effect. Real drums, lamp amplifiers, aggressive and husky vocal were all supposed to be attractive feature of the 'REJECTED BURDEN'. In METAL HAMMER, appeared a large interview in which 'Otwieracz' (drummer) set out some details of the recording of the newest album.
The end of the recording coincided with the first concert organised during promotional tour. Since 4th September 2005 at 'TORTURE EXTERMINATION TOUR 2005' MESS AGE together with the band DEMISE played fifteen concerts in the whole country (Gdansk, Elblag, Olsztyn, Warszawa, Bydgoszcz, Torun, Ciechanów, Rzeszów, Tarnów, Kraków, Bielsko Biala, Wroclaw, Poznan, Zlotów and Wloclawek).
Just after the tour MESS AGE parted with its bassist 'Marys'. The decision was difficult of course but it was made either by MESS AGE or by the bassist himself and they avoided almost all unpleasantness. Later, the ex-bassist of MESS AGE got involved in Britpop crew called 'eM'. Since that event MESS AGE have been a quartet. Bartek Gamrat who had played before with 'Gufi' in the band ASBEEL joined the band as a supporting musician.
24th October 2005- premiere of the third MESS AGE album 'REJECTED BURDEN' - Metal Mind Production.
