We need skaters! Your skill level, age or size doesn't matter. You just need a desire to learn the game. Sponsors, refs, and MANY volunteers are needed. Professional women, to stay at home moms from 21 to 40+ have joined one of the fastest growing sports in the nation.Top 5 reasons to try roller derby1. It's empowering. Most women's sports are fairly tame and although I certainly never thought I would enjoy, let alone participate, in a contact sport I now understand why guys like football so much. Most rollergirls are already self-confident, but we all have moments of crises and doubt like everyone else. Doing this sport has allowed me to focus my overly analytical personality and think strategically, not just on the track, but in everyday life. And regardless of the current crisis, I know it's only a matter of time before I lace up, put on my smelly pads and helmet, and skate until I feel like my legs are going to buckle. Then I drink some water and do it all over again. If I can do roller derby, I can do anything. 2. It's great exercise. Since starting roller derby I can wear some of the clothes I used to wear before I sat in front of a computer all day. I have better balance, more endurance, more muscle mass, less fat, drink a lot of water, and eat all the time. I have to, I'm burning too many calories. 3. All the women are helpful and supportive. This was actually the biggest surprise to me. Although we are NOT all best friends, we recognize the need to learn from each other as well as making sure everyone is playing safely. Although one of the basic strategies is to block, bump or hip check your opponent, we don't want to get hurt or hurt anyone else. 4. You get to wear funky clothes. Unlike traditional team sports where everyone wears the same boring uniform, rollergirls get to spice it up. All teams have colors and a theme, but each player can put her personality into her uniform. Where else do you see fishnets as part of a uniform? Of course fishnets aren't for everyone, but that's the point. You are playing to the crowd, like a pole dancer or a wrestler, and you want to shake things up. Roller derby is a newly revived sport and the personas are the reason for it. Who wants to see the old school derby when they can see a jammer in fishnets get knocked off the track by a blocker with a painted face and tattoos? 5. It's harder than it looks, but it's a lot more fun! The first time I saw a roller derby bout I told a friend it seemed like something I could do. I didn't think the girls couldn't skate very well - they kept falling down. Now that I am doing it and understand it better I realize how mistaken I was. I've never skated like this. My entire life I've had one objective - not to fall down. My first practice we spent 45 minutes doing 4 types of falls over and over. I hated it and could barely get out of bed the next day because my quadriceps were so sore. Now, with a few practices and one bout under my belt, I can't imagine my life without roller derby. The first time you block someone properly - you can feel how well you did it - is amazing. I'm not quite up to jamming yet, but I did it in a scrimmage, all my blockers were spot on, and I fell asleep that night dreaming about being a jammer. I am truly addicted to roller derby.
