About Me

We bama ( Aboriginal ) people from Cape York need to be in control of the future of Cape York for so many reasons, primarily because we are the ancestral owners. Land and sea management is important because it is part of our philosophy. What we value from this philosophy is our holistic connection to everything. Everything is interconnected. We are connected to the land. The land gives us energy and sustains us. With all of the struggles we have endured with the coming of the Europeans the heartache and bloodshed of settlement we still exist and maintain our traditional and spiritual connection to our country. All over Australia Indigenous people are continuing their culture. We aim to invest in our traditional knowledge for the future. This means advocating and instilling our ways. Over 10,000 Indigenous people live in Cape York, it’s been a place we have cherished since time began. Having strong foundations is our future.Recently the Wilderness Society has successfully lobbied the Queensland Government in Australia to impose their "wild rivers" legislation over our traditional value system. Not once did the Wilderness Society consult with the traditional owners of which the wild rivers have been declared in Cape York, the Staaten River. They recently claimed they tour the Cape annually to speak to Indigenous people about their plans for Cape York. There is no evidence of this claim; in fact it has shown that they are not in touch with the concerns and views of Indigenous people of Cape York. The Cape York Youth Action Group are the drivers of the organization and are supported by sister organizations, Cape York Land Council, Balkanu, Cape York Institute and Cape York Partnerships. Initially we will focus on Cape York, with a view to grow the organization to advocate for other parts of Australia. We work very closely with the Traditional Knowledge Recording Pathways Project to preserve, protect and use our traditional knowledge. We will continue to fight for our rights. You can support us by becoming involved and understanding why we need to take control of our cultural heritage. This is what makes us strong.Indigenous Environment Foundation www.myspace.com/iefyouth [email protected]
