Dunja Knebl was born in Zagreb. She has lived in the USA, Indonesia and Russia. After participating in "Viet-Rock" in 1968 (a production by the Zagreb Student Experimental Theatre) she decided that singing and guitar playing would remain her hobby. After completing her studies of English and Russian she worked most of her life as a translator and language teacher, and she sang folk songs to her friends.MUSICAL BIOGRAPHYMy life changed completely when I discovered that thousands of folk songs in Croatia are not sung any more. I began performing professionally in 1993 and since then I have recorded about a hundred folk songs, most of which are on my 8 albums. Most of all I like to record songs I have never heard. I study the many books containing notes and lyrics collected by Croatian music ethnologists during the first half of the 20th century, make arrangements for the voice and guitar and then record the songs with multi-instrumentalists (Mateo Martinovic, Mladen Škalec, Sven Pavlovic, Tomo Sombolac), and guitarists like Danijel Maoduš and Damjan Cakmak. Even though I have never aimed at making my music more commercial, I have been able to continue with my work promoting traditional folk music in Croatia and reinterpreting it my way.I have great fun with people coming to my workshops where we learn to sing Croatian and other folk songs (Check out m = V).The 1999 edition of WORLD MUSIC The Rough Guide (VOLUME I) recommends my album "Iz globline srca".If you like the song LOVE FOR REAL (my lyrics and music), check out Marija Mara.
