About Me

Leonardo De Rose started his musical studies as a self-taught student at 8 years old, by playing guitar and electric double-bass. In his family both classic and jazz music is already present infact his uncles Antonio e Nino De Rose are both players. At the age of 17 in 1998, enroled the “Lorenzo Perosi” Music Academy in Campobasso (Italy). After a seven year course he got a Master of Music with major in classical Double-bass (with top marks). His Professor was Federico Bocchini (first double-bass at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma). During this period he never stopped to study the guitar. He was deeply interested in jazz so that he attended the “Scuola di Musica del Testaccio” in Rome, where he studied jazz improvisation with his uncle, the jazz musician Nino De Rose. In the same time he studied jazz double-bass with his professor Mauro Battisiti. He studied jazz at the Conservatory of Music “Lorenzo Perosi” in Campobasso, attending his uncle Nino De Rose’s courses. In these years he plaied with musicians such as: Beppe D’Amato e Donato Cimaglia. He also attended a seminary of top level orchestral specialization held by a Massimo Giorgi’s. The latter is a virtuoso teacher of classic double-bass. From then on Leonardo De Rose plaied with some of the best Italians jazz musicians such as: Paolino Dalla Porta, Massimo Moriconi e Mauro Battisti. During the 1999, 2000, 2001 e 2007 editions of the “Siena Jazz” he attended the seminaries of Furio Di Castri, Paolino Dalla Porta e Piero Leveratto. Leonardo De Rose plaied in the work-shops with the best Italian jazz musicians, such as: Franco D’Andrea, Stefano Battaglia, Pietro Tonolo, Mario Raja, Fabrizio Sferra, Francesco Petreni, Riccardo Zegna, Giancarlo Schiaffini. In 2001 he received a Master of Music with major in classical Double-bass - Diploma di CONTRABASSO - from the “Lorenzo Perosi” Music Academy in Campobasso. His Professor was Federico Zeppetella. In 2002 and 2004 Leonardo De Rose attended classes “Trio Jazz” at the Siena Jazz Festival with Vittorio Mezza (drummer): the teacher werw Stefano Battaglia (piano), Paolino Dalla Porta (double-bass) and Fabrizio Sferra (drum). The meeting with these artists broadened deeply Leonardo’s horizon towards a more open and modern jazz vision. The autumn of 2001, he attended a jazz course at the “Lorenzo Perosi” Music Academy in Campobasso. His professor was Roberto Mancini. Under his teaching Leonardo improved his performing and arranging, piano jazz, composing and improvisation - Diploma di Jazz - Corso ordinamentale triennale. Another very important occasion was the encounter with the excellent musician Massimo Bucci, a piano player who tought jazz improvisation at the “Lorenzo Perosi” Music Academy in Campobasso. During these lessons Leonardo deepened his studies of jazz composing and improvisation. In 2004 he received a Jazz Diploma postgraduate, followed by a two-year period of performing and arranging - Diploma Accademico Sperimentale di II livello in “Discipline Musicali” Indirizzo Interpretativo-Compositivo: JAZZ . In 2006 Leonardo De Rose received a Diploma postgraduate Laboratory school at the “Lorenzo Perosi” Music Academy in Campobasso about “Jazz Music Education”, with top marks (Bachelor). During this period Leonardo lived between Rome and Campobasso. He played with important musicians who lived in Roma In particular, with the trumpeter Albo Bassi he recorded his first CD “My world” of next publication. On 18th October 2008 Leonardo De Rose received a Diploma postgraduate in Doctor of Music Education with a major in music education - Diploma di Didattica della Musica - achieved at Conservatory of Music the “Lorenzo Perosi”, Campobasso, (Italy). Thanks to this diploma he could teach music at schools so, after two months, he would teach music in a state school in Rome.
