Did you know this about 30 Seconds To Mars?
...began as a small family project for Jared & Shannon
...the band was signed in 1998
…the band name originates, according to Shannon, from an old book called “Argus Apocraphyx”, and according to Jared the name was chosen because it is a good representation of their sound, being lyrical, suggestive, cinematic and filled with immediacy, along with having a sense of otherness to it.
…the band logos Mithra (made for the first album) and Trinity (made for the second) both have the bands motto written on them, the latin phrase “Provehito In Altum”, roughly translate “Launch forth into the deep”
…toured as opening act for Puddle of Mudd during the spring of 2002.
...the first self-titled album was released August 27th 2002, produced by Bob Ezrin
...the first album was mainly Jareds work, he wrote all the songs/lyrics, played all the instruments/did all the programming, apart from the drums
...former guitarists Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler (now in Greath Northern) both left the band due issues primarily related to touring
…Tomo Milosevic (formerly a member of Morphic) joined the band in 2003, he was a huge fan and already knew how to play most of the songs
...the second album, “A Beautiful Lie“, was released August 30st 2005, produced by Josh Abraham
…for the second album the band travelled to five different countries on four different continents to perfect their sound.
…”A Beautiful Lie” as leaked 5 months before its release, which made the band include two bonus track on the final record; “Battle of One“ and a cover of Bjørks “Hunter“.
…”A Beautiful Lie” has been certified platinum by RIAA for distributing over 1 000 000 albums.
…they won an MTV2 Award for “The Kill” at the MTV Video Music Awards, August 31st 2006
…the video for “The Kill” has the band members reenact scenes from the movie “The Shining”, the video was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins.
…the video for “From Yesterday” (losely based on the movie “The Last Emperor”) premiered on MTV2, November 20th 2006, it was the first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People’s Republic of China.
…”The Kill” won the band two awards, April 29th 2007 at the Australian Video Music Awards in the categories Best Rock Video and Video of The Year.
…in 2007 they played support for The Used at the “Taste of Chaos”, and went on to open for Linkin Park on their European tour.. They also played at festivals such as Rock am Ring, Pinkpop and Download among others.
…on March 1st 2007 it was announced from the stage at the El Paso, Texas, “Taste of Chaos” that Matt Wachter was leaving the band.
Tim Kelleher joined as touring bassist as replacement for Wachter.
…they won best single for “The Kill” at the Kerrang awards, August 24th 2007
…they won the “Rock Out” award at the MTV EMAs in Munich, November 1st 2007.
…they are returning to Europe in 2008, and so far they have sold out 12 of 13 shows for their UK & Ireland tour.

Some of the tracks included on the albums changed their title and/or lyrics from the form they had on the demos. “Fallen” was previously called “Jupiter” and “Year Zero” was called “Hero”. “93 Million Miles” originally had lyrics referring to the band Deadsy, whose members provided extra instrumentation on several tracks, but was changed after the two bands were involved in a small feud.
Live shows has premiered two new songs which may end up on the new album; “Some Other Son” and “The Believer”, both initially written for the first album, but scrapped during recordings, as well as “Sisters of Heresey” and “Pressure”.
The band has been known to do a few covers, such as: Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer”, The Polices “Message In A Bottle”, Bjørks “Hunter” (on “A Beautiful Lie”) among others. Most recent cover was Kanye Wests “Stronger”, from Radio 1s BBC Live Lounge, September 14th 2007, this song was also included on the album from the show.
