As Czech immigrants left their homeland to Texas and other regions of North America, their traditions, customs, and music were not left behind. It was common for them to bring with them various musical instruments and their beloved music. As a form of entertainment, many of the families formed musical groups and performed for family wedding and other special events. The formation of the Vaneks of West in 1994, was yet another example of the family band tradition. The members are all of Czech descent They include: Al Vanek (band manager, sax, guitar, bass, button accordion, keyboard, and vocals); his son, Ray (band leader, sax, guitar, bass, button accordion, keyboard, and vocals) and Charlie Kaluza (percussion, vocals); Willie Kaluza (Steel and Bass Guitar); Tony Petter (guitar, bass, button accordion, keyboard, vocals), and Tony’s son, Jerry Petter, who plays all the instruments listed above. The members have a rich ancestral background in Czech polka music. Each member has been inspired by a parent, grandparent, or great grandparent that has previously performed in a Texas Polka band. Al’s paternal grandfather, Ludvik Vanek, was a member of the Penelope Brass Band and his maternal grandfather, Vince Hutyra, played with the Kohut Orchestra of West, Texas around the turn of the 20th century. Al’s son, Ray is now following in his fathers footsteps. Willie Kaluza played with the Kaluza band in the 1960's, then went on the road to play professionally for several years for music legends such as Ray Price and Ernest Tubb. Charlie, Willie's nephew, was inspired by his fathers band, the Kaluzas. Tony, and Jerry Petter were influenced by Alois Petter and the late Jerry Petter, both well known accordion players. The members state “We were inspired by our ancestors, but significant influence came from the many GREAT TEXAS polka bandsâ€.The Vaneks of West emphasis is on traditional polkas and waltzes, with country and rock added to provide the variety required by modern day audiences. Most of the music they produce is developed around saxophone duets, a vibrant accordion, and a peppy rhythm section. Dual vocals and the steel guitar are interlaced to provide a musical variety that exemplifies the modern style of Texas polka music. The band’s repertoire would not be complete without the inclusion of group dances such as the Schottische, Garden Dance, or a an old fashioned Paul Jones. The bands promotes the motto “Keep a song in your heart and make it a POLKA.†The Band always enjoys filling the hearts of many with Texas Czech style polka music. For Booking Information Contact Band Manager Al Vanek @
