About Me
Another Sound awarded BEST LOCAL ALBUM of 2009.
"...for a local band to sound this polished in its debut is practically unheard of."
- City Link
"These Pretty Faces... smell of gasoline and are fueled with Jack Daniel’s. They are not afraid of acoustic dirtiness and broken finger nails. The album “Another Sound†(has) a lot of sun in its heart... the perfect soundtrack for a long, warm, beery summer’s night."
- Jana Vokmann, RockZOOM (Germany)
"...this band offers a stunning glimpse into heartfelt lyrical constructions and a broad range of sound... Within this framework, listeners find an opportunity to experience a new band growing toward a poignant potential for glory."
- J. Edward Sumerau, Metro Spirit
"Another Sound is one of the best local albums to come out this year."
- Dan Sweeney, City Link
"The Pretty Faces are exactly what local music needs: unique and
unpretentious rock and rollers. Tom, Jeph and Hannah
Thorslund... craft tight, catchy tunes
which almost seem out of place in the local music scene. The Pretty
Faces have a cleaned-up garage punk/new wave that sounds like Elvis
Costello, The Kinks and Elliott Smith had a baby and taught it how to
thrash."
- Brett Gillin, Palm Beach/ Miami New Times
"...it's a challenge to find anything disagreeable about this family band... Think about it, you got three good looking, deft musicians from Canada, what’s not to like? Most engaging of all is their ability to dish out straight up hooky pop rock with a grainy hue..."
- Alex Rendon, The Honeycomb
"...the Boca-based trio kicks some serious ass. Inspired by vintage punk and garage acts like Big Star, the Stooges, the Clash, and the Velvet Underground, they do their role models justice, churning out overdrive-laden power pop worthy of the CBGB of old. "
- Christopher Lopez, Broward/Palm Beach New Times
The three members of the Pretty Faces share more than just the same last name. Each possesses a deep respect for the passion and purity of late 70’s Punk Rock. Their varied influences include Elvis Costello, Big Star, Elliott Smith, Squeeze, The Strokes and others. Another Sound, the latest album by The Pretty Faces, draws water from those wells, and quenches a thirst for authentic new wave with liquid lyrics that tumble magnificently over rugged rock.
This sundrenched trio hasn’t always called Florida home. Before moving from Waterloo, Canada to Coral Springs in 2003, founding member Jeph Thorslund and his brother Tom spent long Canadian winters in the basement studio, honing originals into early recordings. Their debut album Lipstick Kiss was described by the Palm Beach New Times as “straight ahead, raw and unpretentious, yet delivered with enough tunefulness to stay in your head after the dancing stops.†When Jeph married his Canadian sweetheart Hannah in 2007, Boca Raton became home to a Garage Pop triumvirate called The Pretty Faces.
The live show proves that these players are far more than their name suggests. Jeph Thorslund’s beautifully crafted songs are sung and performed in a way that can only be described as a finely tuned unleashing of voice, body and guitar. Wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan, “I’m not the bassistâ€, Hannah Thorslund delivers angelic harmonies while pounding out guitar riffs and jangles one might expect from an axe handler twice her weight. Drummer Tom Thorslund drives a clean kit with a backbeat that is straight, stiff and smart.
The new album is now available on iTunes and CDbaby.com. These ten new songs can only be described as Another Sound altogether.
