i dig (a) 'the' bands, (b) boys over girls unless the girls can rap or have bizarre voices, (c) anything that does not end in '-mo,' (d) generally anyone who's dead, (e) clever lyricists, (f) anyone who can play the ukulele,(g) most anyone british, (h) gay men, (i) powerpop, and (j) anything gritty.
examples: the kinks, t-rex, kings of leon, camera obscura, mika, kate nash, dj rekha, dean martin, missy elliott, rufus wainwright, the jam, the clash, buddy holly, hank williams, eagles of death metal, the fratellis, the pogues, the velvet underground, anything andrew bird does, david bowie, the beatles, amy winehouse, the stones, leadbelly, the pipettes, MIA, sam cooke, gorillaz, davíd garza, april march, wolfmother, saul williams, whatever jack white does, etc.
if it isn't a romantic comedy or an action movie, i probably own it and love it and pet it.
my favorite movies usually have some combination of (a) gorgeous cinematography, (b) surrealistic violence, (c) brits, (d) drama, (e) the craptacular, (f) ensemble casts, (g) great soundtracks, (h) fantastical elements, (i) period costumes, (j) snarky dialogue, (k) anti-heroes or endearing villains, (l) witty banter, and/or (m) some gore.
examples: the royal tenenbaums, marie antoinette, master and commander, brokeback mountain, whatever alfonso cuaron does, 28 days later, the descent, the big lebowski, little women (with winona ryder), the fountain, grindhouse, shaun of the dead, charade, donnie darko, severence, a clockwork orange, amelie, anything judd apatow has a hand in, roman holiday, to kill a mockingbird, a tale of two sisters, the thin man, 300, wet hot american summer, kill bill, pan's labyrinth, most anything by ang lee, the apartment, etc.
i prefer shows that are (a) animated, (b) surreal, (c) british, and/or (d) about teenagers.
i also like: (e) music videos , (f) forsensics shows, (g) talent-based reality shows, (h) makeover-based reality shows, (i) parodies, (j) anything with 'star trek' in the title, and (k) whatever's popular on HBO or showtime.
examples: law & order: SVU, deadwood, firefly, futurama, frisky dingo, black adder, the office (UK), FLCL, cowboy bebop, home movies, arrested development, freaks and geeks, amazing race, ANTM, 30 rock, quite interesting, my so-called life, CSI: las vegas, northern exposure, venture bros., pete + pete, no reservations, star trek anything, curb your enthusiasm, flight of the conchords, etc.
if it isn't about or by dead, white guys i probably haven't read it. ...unless it's by living indian women, then i probably have.
my favorite books almost always have (a) dense, layered plots, (b) ensemble casts, (c) clever digressions, (d) a heavy reliance on fate and happenstance, (e) ridiculously-named characters, (f) endearing villains, (g) amusing sidekicks, and (h) a pervading sense of melancholy. unless we're talking graphic novels, then there better be (i) zombies.
examples: tom jones, a tree grows in brooklyn, english passengers, y: the last man, the namesake, midnight's children, jude the obscure, LOTR, the goon, sherlock holmes, harry potter (books 3-5), his dark materials, cloud atlas, catcher in the rye, anything by roald dahl, the chronicles of narnia, giants in the earth, the go-between, maurice, oscar wilde's children's stories, tristram shandy, hot gimmick, anything by louisa may alcott, the poisonwood bible, the walking dead, specimen days, the sparrow, middlesex, watership down, etc.
