http://claytonhousefortsmith.com/Hello, my name is Roxanne Baker and I’ve been living in Fort Smith, AR since August of 1978. I’ve created this Myspace for The Clayton House because I love this house so dearly I consider it to be a part of the family. When my family moved to Fort Smith I was only 12 years old and we knew absolutely no one in this town. We moved here from Kentucky to make a fresh start after my father’s roofing business went under and our live were total clean slates and new beginnings. I remember the hot summer day we arrived the first thing I saw when I awoke and looked out to see my new home place was The Clayton House and it was so magical to me. I had never seen anything so beautiful. My parents, my brother and sister and I moved into a small one-bedroom apartment across the street from my dream mansion as we didn’t have much money. I remember it was called the Shipley Apartments and it has been long since torn down. So many nights I would stay awake long into the night looking out the window at this amazing house I dreamed of living in someday. I had never been inside of anything so elegant, much less ever thought I had the chance of living in anything like this. Once I found out what this house was and that I could tour it I, along with my mom, brother and sister went over to the house to take a tour. It was so incredible. At that time the tour guides were very kindly retired ladies and I took up with them immediately. It was very hot in the house as there was no central air installed at the time so I would take them lemonade when I got home from school and they would allow me to walk around and look at the house. I was in total heaven. I never touched anything I wasn’t supposed to touch as I had complete respect for this magical house. There is a confession I must make however and will add that this slight overstepping of my bounds was done with great caution for the house and its well-being. At one point I went up into the attack to see where it had once caught fire and at another point I raised a window in the upstairs hallway and climbed out onto the balcony to have a look. Looking back I know that wasn’t wise, but my curiosity did take me over. Even though my family eventually moved to the country and I had to spend several years away from the house, it never left my heart and mind. While in college I needed an extra job so I became a tour guide at the house along with my college pal Cecily. We had a blast together as we both shared a love and passion for this awesome place of wonder. We felt like protectors of the house and looked over everything as though we were its guardian angels. I have many more stories to tell and will tell in future blogs. All I know is that this house will be a treasure to my soul for as long as I live.
