AID FOR AIDS

About Me

Myspace Layout Maker v2.0

AID FOR AIDS was founded in 1996 to help ensure that people in the developing world could gain access to critical medication. We continue with this important mission so that more people who need HIV treatments in order to stay alive can receive them.
Recycling: The act of gathering, sorting, discarding, repacking, and storing unused medicines, before their expiration date, and redistributing them to non-US territories as humanitarian aid

AFA offices collect all medications related to the treatment of HIV & AIDS. These include: Antiretroviral Medications, including:
• Protease Inhibitors (PI)
• Nucleoside Reverse Transciptase Inhibitors (NRTI)
• Non-nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTI)
• Fusion Inhibitors
Medications to treat Opportunistic Infections, including:
• Antifungals/Antimycotics (such as Floconazole, Mycelex, Spornox)
• Antivirals (such as Acyclovir, Flamicovir, Valacylovir)
• Antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin, Amoxicilin, Metronidazole)
AFA is now the world's largest recycler of HIV medications, and while collecting and distributing these lifesaving therapies is a major focus, we continually expand our services in response to the needs for assistance we encounter in many communities.

ATAP is designed to provide health-care providers and HIV-infected individuals with HIV/AIDS treatment planning and medication resource management. ATAP conducts a continual nationwide HIV/AIDS medication collection outreach effort. ATAP collects ARVs, antibiotics and numerous other medications for the treatment of AIDS-related conditions. Our donors are people who have a surplus of medication because they have changed their therapy, have discontinued their use or have died. These un-expired medications are then sent to ATAP clients in their native countries in collaboration with and direct supervision of their health care providers. A three-month advance inventory is maintained for each client in order to assure continuity of medical care. ATAP has four active programs:

1. Latin America AIDS Program is currently providing antiretroviral therapy to 180 clients in Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
2. Caribbean AIDS Program is currently providing antiretroviral therapy to 41 clients in Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad.
3. African AIDS Program is currently providing antiretroviral therapy to 83 clients in Burundi, Ethiopia, Mali, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
4. Medicine Collection Division: All recycled medications are received, catalogued and distributed by the Medicine Collection Division.

AID FOR AIDS International (AFA) uses advocacy, as part of their mission and in the development of their programs. It is understood that no assistance or support program is sustainable if social and structural changes are not generated.
Through the years, AFA has forged alliances with different organizations, groups and cooperating agencies, predominantly in the countries where we have a physical presence- through our local satellite offices (Chile, Dominican Republic, Panama, Peru and Venezuela) as well as on a global scale (both regional and global).
The goal of the Department of Advocacy is to identify, construct and strengthen the capacities of the persons living with HIV, so that they can develop and defend their own agenda, in response to the epidemic of HIV and AIDS.
Our work ranges from understanding political dialogue and generating public conscience, to strengthening organizations and/or groups of PLWHA in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Since 2005, the activities of the Department of Advocacy have focused on cultivating and supporting work done by people living with HIV. In addition, we work against stigma and discrimination by educating the public’s conscience. The support of organizations and/or groups at local and regional levels has been demonstrated through the promotion and strengthening of networks and the construction of capacities for promotion and public defense.

New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL)
In 2001, AFA created a program to provide social services to immigrants living with HIV or AIDS called New York Immigrant AIDS Link. All our services are provided at our New York Headquarters. The model of the program is designed to help immigrants living with HIV or AIDS to acquire supportive/social services in order to improve their quality of life.

The Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program understands the difficulties immigrants encountered in adjusting to a new environment, language, and culture, especially when dealing with health issues. NYIAL program helps individuals to cope with all these diverse issues in a confidential and non-judgmental environment where they will receive the support necessary to overcome these barriers.
The New York Immigrant AIDS Link program is also involved in HIV testing and prevention with immigrants because they are at higher risk than other populations of acquiring HIV. With the assistance of the Mexican Dominican Republic and Colombian consulates AFA has been able to conduct these services. In addition, AFA is committed to educating and training individuals to become peer educators in order to conduct HIV testing and prevention in their communities.
