BILAL SUNNI-ALI is a musician, performer, composer, educator, community activist and advocate. He has performed live, on stage with Gil Scott-Heron, Brian Jackson, Doug Carn, Stevie Wonder, Wynton Marsaillis, American ..Symphony Orchestra, Jimmi Hopps-Esspirit, Earl Turbinton, Pharoah Saunders, and many, many more. He has been a student of John La Porta, Gebre H’watt and Yuself Lateef.. He has taught music in public and private schools including McDonough 15 in New Orleans, Uhuru Sasa in Brooklyn, Washington DC, Mississippi, California and Georgia.. As a composer BILAL has written for and collaborated with Gil Scott-Heron, Jo Grinage, Ebony JoAnn and Black Arts Movement architects Askia M. Toure’ and Amiri Baraka. BILAL has lectured on campuses and at community institutions locally, nationally and internationally on music, culture and related topics. Co-Founder of the Griot Society I New York 1975; the performing arts director of the SAMECA Inc.(Southern Arts, Media, Education, Connections Association) and he is a performing member of the World Health Arkestra.. Theatrical Experience He has been a community health-care worker, a drug addiction recovery counselor and a consultant on alternative therapy.. BILAL recently toured the United States, Europe Scandonavia and South Afrika once again a featured soloists with Gil Scott-Heron celebrating the re-releases on CDs of some classic Midnight Band albums now on |Gil’s own label. BILAL SUNNI-ALI currently lives in Atlanta’s Historic West End district where he is a practicing Muslim and on many Sunday evenings can be caught ‘jamming’ in the West End at the Lush Life Café’(non-alcoholic/vegetarian). He frequents the Carolinas, Florida, (misses NEW ORLEANS ), Texas, points divergent and in between performing at festivals and other alternative venues.
