Art in the Library

About Me

Art in the Library is a public art program of the University of Melbourne Library run within the Baillieu Library. It is designed to expose the works of contemporary and emerging artists.

Artists are also invited to engage with the rich and diverse Cultural Collections held by the University of Melbourne as a source of inspiration for their work. Art in the Library aims to enrich the community by making these collections more accessible and creating challenging, dynamic and stimulating study environments through its exhibition program.

Current Exhibition - Fotoholics 27 October- 28 November 2008
Fotoholics, the Melbourne University Photography Club is a union-affiliated club with over 200 members. As part of this semester’s activities a photography competition was held for their members. They received over 400 entries. The photos that were shortlisted are currently being displayed on the First Floor of the Baillieu, in the quiet study area. The theme was 'Journeys'.

‘Journeys’ is a theme with an open-ended interpretation. It can symbolise the past academic year that will be concluding at the time of the competition; how the world and individuals have changed on a macro or micro scale; objects partaking in journeys; or physical, metaphorical, or emotional journeys individuals have taken.

The work is beautiful and inspiring. A thought-provoking distraction as exams draw closer.
Current Exhibition - Imago: The Collection by Jan Palethorpe
8 October-7 November 2008
The work in this exhibition focuses on a small section of Victorian and NSW endangered, threatened or vulnerable invertebrates. Unfortunately, due to the mass destruction of habitats there are now too many creatures without backbone on the endangered list for me to represent.

‘Endangered likely to become extinct’ is a label which fills me with deep remorse.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

We provide alternative exhibition spaces for artists within a fantastic environment for maximum exposure for works of art. With over a million visits to the Baillieu Library annually (local, regional and overseas students, academics and members of the community), exhibitors gain a varied and appreciative audience while the Library's customers experience art they may not normally encounter in mainstream galleries.

Exhibitions have included paintings, photographs, sculptures, montages and collages by individual artists as well as groups.

So if you fit the bill, we'd like to meet you!
