Sonora

Sonora es uno de los 31 estados federales de México (Estados Unidos Mexicanos) y se ubica al noroeste del territorio. Su nombre proviene del ópata Xunuta, Lugar de maíz. Colinda con los estados de Chihuahua al oriente, Sinaloa al sur y Baja California al noroeste; al norte comparte una extensa frontera con el estado de Arizona de Estados Unidos y hacia el poniente colinda con el Mar de Cortés o Golfo de California. El estado se divide en 72 municipios y ocupa el segundo lugar nacional en extensión, ocupa un 9.2% del total del territorio mexicano.El territorio está conformado por cuatro provincias fisiográficas: La de la Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierras y Valles paralelos, desierto y la costa del Golfo de California.

On 30 September 1830 that state was divided into two – the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
