About Me

This page was made by my daughter Amanda in my memory. My name is Leona and I was killed by a drunk driver on October 27, 2000 on my way to my family camp for the last time with my daughter. My car was struck by a drunk driver at 65 mph, and I was killed instantly. Luckily my daughter made it out with only a few cuts and bruises, but now she knows I am her angel. My family and friends have had quite a struggle without me. I left behind 2 beautiful children, a son Benjamin, and a daughter Amanda. I also left behind wonderful grandchildren, and alot of loving family. I want people to know how drunk driving affects people, and not just certain people, for I thought this could never happen to me. Please know that this could happen to anyone, including you! Stay where you are if drinking. There is nothing in life that should stop you from making a wise choice of just waiting. Not only does drunk driving injure and/or take lives, it affects every person that is involved in ones lives. Please don't drink and drive, there are so many other options.
My favorite thing in the world was gardening. I always told my daughter, who at the time was an artist herself, and couldn't understand how I could work in dirt, "this is my art" I worked at Chuck Hafners Farmers Market for 12 years of my life, and loved what I did. I spent my weekends with my family at our camp boating, swimming, and cooking out. Basically anything in the outdoors is what interested me, especially Lake Ontario. I'm now on that beach permanantly and would have it no other way.
I loved country music, absolutely loved it. Garth Brooks was my favorite country musician. I once saw him at the War Memorial in Syracuse NY. I had a tendancy to dance around the kitchen real silly, and sing the songs while dancing around.
I come from a really big family. I have 9 siblings other than myself, 2 of which are now here in heaven with me. I didn't come from much, which only made me a stronger person, and more appreciative of what I had. I married, and unfortunatly lost my husband to alcohol. I had my first son at the age of 16, and at the age of 27 Amanda was born. I worked hard everyday of my life to take care of my family, and provide for them, and give them all of the things I never had in life. We lived a good life, full of love. My family misses me more than anything, and asks please, look at this page and think before you get behind the wheel of your car after drinking.
Because of one man I no longer can do all of these things. I was struck by a Lincoln town car being operated by Matthew B. Jerla II. It was 7pm, and he was far over the intoxication level. He was given 1 1/2 -3 years for his actions, and My family and I feel that this is unjust. He served 3 years, but how is 3 years punishment enough for taking a life and endangering another? We need to fight for stronger laws and penalties. Something must be done to stop drunk drivers.
My greatest sympathy goes out to anyone who has been affected by drunk driving like I have, and I thank you all for putting your time into reading over my page. Please, think before you drink, its the only way to save a life!
