The most promising of a new generation of British guitar bands, Leagues, will make a strong statement of intent in the coming months, and their confident, purposeful debut EP, ‘Blank Flags’, will act only as a starting point and a catalyst for a set of young men who are determined and destined to go far. Most of the debut recording is an invigorating blast of post punk-pop noise, mixed quite wonderfully with vocalist Jeff Raine’s haunting and hugely inviting vocal, executing the groups provoking lyrics with elegance and guile.
The boldness to which Leagues deliver never once becomes overbearing and they can only be praised for displaying a real sense of ambition that marks them out from their contemporaries and places them head and shoulders above a UK music scene which does little to stimulate or electrify. The inventiveness of the North-East assemble is evident and Blank Flags is merely an appetizer to their defiant and thrilling individuality.
And while the Newcastle five-piece may ultimately be as hidebound as their influences, they've clearly listened to more than the usual records. Adding to their indie template with a judicious and tantalising use of samples, synths and keyboards, the stunning ‘His voice was his weapon’ is their calling beacon and is here to remind us just what we’ve been missing in a band for a very long time.
The band seamlessly construct shimmering, eerie soundscapes that are both abrasive as they are beautiful and you can’t help but feel that they know something that we don’t. Follow the searing guitars, the electronic cacophony and the melody, and be inspired by a set of musicians who are here to the show us how it is done.
