About Me
Janet Rabin Phillips graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Music Composition and a Masters Degree in Film Music Composition from The North Carolina School of the Arts. She studied under David McHugh (composer of the scores for Mystic Pizza, Moscow on the Hudson) and studied audio recording by John Sisti ( Emmy award sound supervisor for Mad About You, Oscar winner for Best Sound in Bram Stoke's Dracula).
Unlike typical composers, Janet was trained to write music specifically to enhance visual effects. Janet's skills include music for film, documentaries, animations, drama features, commercials and television shows.
Janet has scored films in all genres from drama, comedy, romance, sci-fi, horror to action. Several of the films have been screened at popular film festivals in the United States and Europe. The films Sparks (Andre Ford, Director) and Kinds of People (Ryan Ashton, Director) were screened in Los Angeles at the Directors Guild of America. Sparks was screened at the Rencontres Henri Langlois Festival in Poiters, France as well as First Sundays Festival in New York City. Some of Janet's music was used in The Warped Galaxy (Brent Triplett, Director) which won awards at the Final Cut Film Festival. Most recently, Janet's score for Jacob's Crypt (Jonathan Sikes, Director) won The Silver Award for Excellence at the Park City Film Music Festival for ' Best Use of Music in a Short Film'.
"Janet Phillips score for 'Sparks' was both important and extremely effective in establishing the tone of the film. The bouncy and quirky nature of the music immediately allowed the audience to digest the film and have fun with its taboo subject matter, making it easier for them to feel comfortable laughing. The score for this film (and in all the ones that I have seen with her composing) pays close attention to both the characters and the overall identity of the piece. When Janet and I were first talking about this project, I told her that the music would be both extremely important and extremely sparse...and she rose up to the challenge and surpassed my expectations."
- Andre Ford (Director of Sparks)
Sound Healing is another aspect of music which Janet has extensive knowledge. She has conducted research to relieve pain and stress through use of vibroacoustics, binaural sound waves and specific use of frequencies. Janet is the creator and President of Birthnotes, which is a CD of relaxation music for women during childbirth. Hospitals and childbirth educators use Birthnotes in their classes and labor rooms to assist during childbirth in conjunction with rhythmic breathing.
