About Me

Roberto Pitre's Latin Jazz group, The Tambo Jazz & Salsa Band was founded by Roberto in 1999. It featured some of the best Latin players on the New York scene. Pitre's goal for the group has always been to forge a new sound that brings a vitality and freshness to Latin Jazz, combining Panamanian, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Brazilian & Indian music in notable arrangements and creative compositions. Tambo Jazz represents a new generation on the New York Latin Jazz Scene. Pitre's musical life began at an early age with classical training in piano and musical theory at the Panama Conservatory. He taught himself Tolou flute and Latin percussion playing in school bands, Folk, Charanga and Salsa music groups before enrolling at the National Conservatory. In 1978, Pitre was awarded a fellowship to study classical music at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. While there, he absorbed Brazilian Jazz and Folk music, which influenced the harmonic creativity and unique rhythm of his arrangements and compositions. He has gigged with notable jazz players Victor Boa, John Benitez, Igor Atalita, Edsel Gomez, Hector Martignon, Jeff Gardner, Danilo Perez and Mauricio Smith. He has also played MPB and Salsa with Chiquinho de Moraes, Norato, Joao Donato, Raul de Souza, Vanderlea, Jair Rodrigues, Celia Cruz, Cauby Peixoto as well as Edwin Pitre, Andy Gonzalez, Mario Kotes, Nelson Gonzalez, Milagros Lanty, and Alexis Castillo. Roberto has begun touring and recording under his own name. Roberto Pitre's Tambo Jazz brings together Panamanian Folk music, Brazilian harmonies, Afro-Cuban rhythms with American and Oriental influences. Vivo En Vida is Roberto's first official release.
