About Me
My First foray into playing music came about when I was in my second year at senior school in York, when I took up flute lessons, although I admit that this was only to avoid maths lessons, and not to become a virtuoso flautist. Well, they offered me the chance to escape so I took it, I'd have probably volunteered to learn the bagpipes if I could avoid hearing all about bleeding Pythagoras for half an hour a week. Believe me, if you were as good at maths as I am you'd have done the same. Eventually, of course, I was released from school, and they wanted the flute back, so that was that, until somewhere along the line I picked up a guitar, got a friend to show me a few chords and joined the worship band at our church, where before too long I started writing my own songs. For a while I played as one half of a duo with a girl from the local college. Next came the inevitable progression to amplifiers and electric guitars, I also started playing the bass too, but some people weren't too impressed with us playing Rock & Roll in their beloved church, so that kind of went out the window PDQ. A few years later however, at a different church I joined another worship band who wanted a bassist. This time though, being older and wiser, (or perhaps just stroppier) we took somewhat less notice of the "It's too loud" crowd and just got on with it. Wanting to do more than just play hymns on Sundays, along with three others we formed a band called "Crossfire". and played on the local pub circuit. Mainly our own music, but with a few well known covers thrown in, Dire Straits, Rolling Stones, Dylan etc. Playing regularly in several bars around York, Leeds and Harrogate. Individually though, all of the band members were involved in seperate projects, which made it difficult to find the time to rehearse, so we called it a day. I still play at St Andrew's church in York from time to time, but as there's no regular band at the moment I've been writing and recording my own material, the idea being to produce a CD. As it's a solo project I've had to play all the instruments myself, which was interesting, yet the single most important thing that I've discovered while doing this, is that you never have to tell the drummer to STOP MAKING THAT ******* NOISE! all the time...
