Sergey Smirnov was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1980. He graduated from the Music College of the Belarusian Academy of Music in 1998 (with E. Gorbunova, V. Nehaenko) and continued his studies at the Music Academy in Minsk (with
Yuri Gildyuk). Since September 2003 Sergey has been student of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, The Netherlands, where he works with Naum Grubert.
Sergey's creative output is very high. His numerous recitals and chamber performances represent a wide repertoire, ranging from the baroque to contemporary music. Between 1990 and 2006 Sergey performed piano concertos by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich with chamber and symphony orchestras. In the years 1994 - 2006 he played in Belarus, Russia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Germany and England.
Sergey has also given numerous solo recitals in The Netherlands: in Vlissingen,
Den Bosch, Leiden, Amsterdam (Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, Amstelkerk), Haarlem, Santpoort-Noord, Utrecht (Vredenburg), Den Haag (Dr. Anton Philipszaal, Arnold Schönbergzaal, House of Representatives, Societeit de Witte), Gouda, Delft, Aerdenhout, Bloemendaal, Rotterdam, Alkmaar (Ypma concertzaal), Katwijk (Oude Kerk, Soefitempel), Wassenaar (“De Paauwâ€, NIAS), and Heemstede (Het Oude Slot, Oude Kerk).
Since 1997, Sergey has taken part in Master Classes given by Viktor Merzhianov, Charles Rosen, Stefan Vladar, Igor Roma and Jacques Rouvier.
Sergey Smirnov was awarded prizes at international piano competitions in Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Portugal and Japan.
