Friday's 2100-2300 EST listen on the net - follow the link from www.WMPG.org . . . . I started in the summer of '95 when Nate March (who appeared on Dougly's show in Orono) came to Portland and began playing ska on WMPG. Nate brought in Chris De Vere, and then moved on to greener pastures. Chris brought Rob Hoyt in as a drunken guest host. (Good Times) and then smoked too much pot and began to forget to come in himself. :-) Although Rob was not officially allowed to do the show by himself, he carried on anyway. When he got caught, he fell under the good graces of then Program Director Jim Rand (now Station Manager! - and long time member of Big Meat Hammer) and was given a chance to take the official dj training and carry on with the show. As time passed, Rob wanted to hitchike to Philadelphia and work on Gazela, the 180' Barkentine, and oldest square-rigged ship in continuous operation, for the summer. So, he cut a deal with Matt Maloney to cover the show while he was away, and when he returned, to alternate weeks hosting the show. Matt was a superb dj, whose knowledge and attention to detail helped further the excellent reputation of Stay Rude. Matt moved on to other pastures as well, creating his own record label, Spitshine, and playing drums for the likes of The Allstonians and Riki Rocksteady. Rob, who is a big fan of the fans, doesn't hesitate to invite bonafide fans in to co-host. Steff Stylee was only thirteen in the beginning, but came to host her own show, "Daisy Pusher", before eventually moving to California. Another outstanding co-host was Sin, who Rob'd like to see come back for more. He says she's good company and easy on the eyes! Not to mention, she knows her stuff, enjoys the music, and has a great voice. One may also be subjected to hearing any of Rob's five kids and their musical choices, like when Rowan's attending, there's obligitory Black Sabbath, and "Sally Brown". Recently, Rob's eldest child, Caleb, has agreed to be "hired" to record playlists and post them on the "Oi! Punk Ska Maine" group.
I've now been around for lucky fourteen years or so and am the longest running ska show in Maine. I play any ska from the sixties, 2-Tone, and right through the 3rd Wave, and sometimes non-ska that appeals to the ska listening crowd. I'm definitely not a ska purist; I'm in it for the fun!
