Empress Tanisha was born in Brooklyn, New York to Rastafarian Jamaican parents. Her mother sang in a Reggae band called Negus while she was pregnant with Empress Tanisha, so her love for music started from in the womb. While attending the University at Albany for a Master's degree in African Studies, Empress Tanisha got her first gig at the Twenty Poet Talent Showcase 2001. After receiving a great response from the crowd, Empress Tanisha was driven to express her singing talent to a larger listening audience. Empress Tanisha influences include Robert Nesta Marley, Dennis Brown, Garnett Silk, Glen Washington, Luther Vandross, Etta James, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans.Empress Tanisha realized that many others in her family were musically inclined, including Judah Fyah, her cousin, mentor, and co-writer who immediately took her under his wing and helped her to record her first two tracks: Take Chances & Faith. The first track was inspired by a crush that Empress Tanisha had on an anonymous man, whom she finally conjured up the courage to confess her true feelings to through the song. Faith was written to encourage people to keep the faith that they can be the best they can be. Empress Tanisha uses her music as a form of self expression and to send inspiring messages to the masses.Empress Tanisha is working on her debut album, collaborating with other artists and hopes that her music will one day leave an imprint in the music world.
