A slice of the Pink Traktor story, according to a fan....
It was back in 93, or thereabouts, when the stars aligned in just such a way…creating the Orpheus force that forever linked the souls of three bizarrely brilliant creatures: Steve Ditto, Levon Spencer, and Brandon Hauert.
Armed with an unwavering passion for music and a compulsion to excel at everything in life that your mom and your therapist tell you never to do, they charged forth into the world. Steve formed a band by the name of Cactus Tea, which quickly gathered a loyal cult following among Salt Lake locals. They played everywhere from house parties and bars to large music festivals like Mayfest and Ronstock. Other than Steve, who was the vocalist and primary songwriter for Cactus Tea, the band members revolved over the next few years. Brandon Hauert played drums for a spell and at another juncture played guitar. Levon Spencer began playing guitar for the band and later switched to bass. Other key members over time included Graham Beers and Steve Creer.
Total world domination seemed imminent, but the boys were damn young, and while their musical mastery was great their propensity for licentiousness was even greater. They split up for the next little while, each venturing off to chase destiny, defy death, and tempt fate in ways that would make any normal man cry and shrivel into a tiny pile of dust. Luckily for us they continued to be charged by their passion for music all the while, and none of them lost any appendages or anything like that along the way. By the time they reconvened in May, 2007 all three had become staggeringly savvy musicians each with a broad range of musical tastes and talents to contribute.
And then they were four. In July of 2007, the band found themselves jamming with Levon's super-talented guitar playing friend Chaz who Levon had once played with in a local metal band called Rune. Magical musical voodoo ensued, and Chaz joined the Pink Traktor lineup.
The sound that results is a hodgepodge of magnificence…ambient, groovy, poetic, danceable, Doors-meets-Jane’s Addiction, sexy as hell, like the old Cactus Tea sound…plus a touch of darkness, a shot of wisdom, a drop of road rash, a dash of Cash, and a little harmonica. There you have Pink Traktor. Go check them out straight away.
