Asajagroove is a poet, activist, and health care worker. She has shared her poetry on stages across the country. Asajagroove began writing intensively under the supervision of Dr. Dorothy Perry Thompson at Winthrop University. Today, the influence of Thompson, Ai, Finney, and Gibran have led Asaja to a razor-beautiful voice all her own.Asaja's poetry is published in OUT OF THE ROUGH: WOMEN'S POEMS OF SURVIVAL AND CELEBRATION, which has featured the likes of Nikki Giovanni. Recently her work was selected for publish in the 2006 Kakalak Poetry Anthology.
G Y P S Y F E E T, Asajagroove's first anthology of poetry, is an important collection of writings that dare us all to embrace her jagged-edge appeal. She is a four time member of Columbia’s nationally ranked poetry slam team and is Columbia's reigning Grand Slam Champion.
On stage Asaja has extended her voice for acting in such productions as The VagIna Monologues and an upcoming production of For Colored Girls Who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Was Not Enuff.In 2002, Asaja was invited to open for the legendary Amiri Baraka at Wake Forest University. Free Times Magazine selected Asaja as their cover artist for their feature on Columbia Poetry Slam. Asaja currently resides in Columbia, South Carolina conducting writing workshops, coaching performances artists, and raising art awareness within the community.
