A Little about the Artist:Lura began her artistic endeavors at the tender age of 5, when forced to sit in church on Sundays with her loving parents. In order to keep her still, her mother (also an artist) would shove a pencil and some scratch paper in her hands and she would be content for the rest of the sermon, drawing all sorts of fanciful things. One day Lura discovered the theatre and fell in love with designing, mostly sets and lights, but she was also fascinated with costume design. She also began performing the art of belly dance and began designing and sewing all of her own costumes, but then a physical condition made it so she could no longer perform. While doing some internet surfing, she discovered a woman who transformed fashion dolls into fanciful creatures and gypsies. The gypsy dolls made her long for her days of belly dance and suddenly she got an idea! “I could make dolls into belly dancers!†Her first attempts were rather awkward, but she soon found books and cd’s teaching the techniques of re-painting, styling or re-rooting hair and as she practiced she became more and more accomplished at her art. People began asking to buy her belly dance dolls and soon she was also being asked to do dolls of other persuasions as well.Lura says,†It is my goal to bring the dolls to life. I want people to look at this doll, not as a re-made fashion doll, but as a character with a personality and life of its own. I view the doll as a sculpted form on which I can place my own interpretation of the character that manifests in my imagination. People tell me they feel a connection with certain dolls and I know it is because the personality of the doll shines through to them. I want my dolls to bring joy to people.â€SOME FACTS:I. The costumes are designed and handmade by Lura. They are sewn, glued and sometimes pinned on, (usually the hats) and are not meant to ever be removed. II. Lura is not affiliated with Mattel, or any other toy manufacturer. III. Most of the dolls are rescued from thrift stores and yard sales, but only if they are in near perfect condition. Some are purchased new. IV. Lura spends many hours on each doll, and bases the prices on the complicity of the costume and hair. V. Lura will do custom made dolls if it is something she feels she can accomplish, please feel free to contact her if you have something in mind.TECHNIQUE: The doll’s face is completely removed and an entire new one is painted, to create expression and character. The costume and expression depend on how that particular doll manifests itself in Lura’s imagination. The costume is designed for each individual doll. You will never see two alike. She uses good quality acrylic paints mixed with a high quality sealant. Often the hair is styled, cut, sometimes dyed and sometimes completely removed and re-rooted with new hair.
