John Dissed

About Me

After years of various collaborations with vocalists, guitarist John Dissed began singing and recording his own songs in the fall of 2007.
His honest and battle-scarred baritone, a newly discovered instrument for him, delivers well-crafted, oftentimes sarcastic (other times nostalgically romantic) acoustic songs of inspiration, love, hate and revenge. Lyrically, Dissed veers sporadically between the political and personal. Aware of the Hellish precipice we teeter on the very edge of as a species, references to a violent Apocalypse abound.
John was recognized by the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2006 for co-writing the song “Mr. Madness” (as performed by the artist Manda) chosen as Rock Single of the Year.
As a guitarist, Dissed has spent the past three years performing throughout the Southwest with Los Angeles female-fronted punks, Bull Lee.
In January, 2008, John announced that he would unveil a new solo acoustic track per week for the entire year. The songs were offered online via Myspace (www.myspace.com/johndissed) for streaming and optional free download.
Alternating between originals and covers by such artists as David Bowie, The Clash, Johnny Thunders, The Ramones, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, the songs were announced via Myspace Bulletins and Blog entries.
By Fall 2009, Dissed will have released five solo EPs on the DIY Bull Lee Records label. The first four of these are exclusively available now for digital download via his Myspace Snocap Store (www.myspace.com/johndissed) for a discounted $.49 per track.

Sounds Like: John Dissed is guitarist with the punk band Bull Lee whom I've reviewed here before. His solo EP is entirely acoustic and reflects a more sensitive side than you'd find with his regular band. "Future's Bright" is downright optimistic and sweet. "Sundown Sometime" is more strident and offers some neat guitar playing. Dissed has a battle-scarred but distinctive voice that comes across well here. "Next to you" ends the EP on a high note, Dissed singing of missing his love. It's a very nice little EP and an interesting change of pace for Dissed. Let's hope he explores it further sometime.
