Shangri La formed in 2001, a makeover of one of the most memorable Bulgarian grunge bands, Sad Toy Killer. Their compelling presence does not remain unnoticed in the following couple of years, and songs like “I wanted to have you†and “Like never before†hold top positions in the Bulgarian charts, peaking in BG Radio-s Most-Listened-To Top 20.Virginia Records/Universal Music release their debut album Someone Loves You, for Christmas 2002. The release is immediately followed by awards for best debut at the BG Radio/Metro Media annual music awards and MeloTV Mania/Bulgarian National Television annual music awards, as well as nominations for best rock/alternative band and best music video from MM TV in 2004.The band keep themselves busy through 2003-2004 with numerous club shows and concerts, and are invited to participate in the international festival “Cerbul de Aur†in Brasov, Romania. They also bring home the award from the BG Radio/MSat TV “Song of the year†contest in 2004.2005-2006 are hard years for the band, as personal difficulties keep them away from the stage. The hardest moment is the illness and passing away of Rossen Cheshmedziev, the band’s producer and sixth, unofficial member. Working on the song One of us, a requiem for Rossen, keeps the band together through this difficult time.It is One of us that brings Shangri La back onto the Bulgarian musical stage. The Bulgarian National Radio grants the band the special award in their annual competition, thus giving them the chance to participate in Eurosonic.Shangri La are now wrapping up the materials for their new album, high on the feeling of a new beginning, yet anchored in their previous experience.
