BIO
Dusan Rebolj and Borut Praper, the two halves of the author/producer duo tentatively named Last Legs, meet in 2002 via an internet forum of jaded neurotics and semi- to full-fledged alcoholics who occasionally attempt to pass themselves off as film translators. At some point this merry group decide to have a party and actually meet, rather than merely exchange dubious advice and insult each other through email. Our heroes, along with Borut's significant other Monika, spend an afternoon and an evening sitting on a balcony, imbibing mythic amounts of alcohol, discussing their dislike of almost everything and their shared irrational fear of werewolves. The event concludes with an impromptu jam-session, which consists of Dusan banging out the basic four chords on an acoustic guitar, shrieking obscenely out-of-tune renditions of sad Irish folk songs, while Borut, an accomplished drummer when in control of his faculties, does his declining best to accompany him on a darbuka. The first seeds of Last Legs are sown.
Cut to three years later. Borut proposes an idea to Dusan. Would he like to write English lyrics to some of the songs by SUR , Borut’s ongoing music project? Dusan gives it a try and the results are promising. He takes Lahko te cutim (I Can Feel You), a sensual love ballad about a gal yearning for a guy, and twists it into a paranoid tale of religious insanity and murder called Sleepwalkers. Ne premorem besed (Speechless), a sensual love ballad about a gal yearning for a guy, becomes The Hive, a collection of anguished reflections from a person feeling incarcerated by their nearest and dearest. It’s not that Dusan is not interested in gals yearning for guys, it’s just that, in terms of narratives, he finds other facets of the human condition more appealing and newsworthy. For some reason or other, the plan to properly record these SUR songs in English gets shelved, but the two recognize the potential in the work they’ve done, and decide to take it further.
Dusan, who likes to think of himself as a composer, as well as a lyricist – this is borne of necessity, since he has to write his own melodies to accommodate his limited vocal range – starts playing some of his “compositionsâ€, simple chord progressions combined to form a naive verse-chorus-verse structure, to Borut, who constructs sound collages around them in his home recording studio. The resulting songs are a way for Borut to move away from the sonically multi-layered, rhythmically complex endeavor that is SUR and expand his horizons as producer and co-author, and a way for Dusan to explore his undying fascination with the pop song format and get some shit off his chest.
Also, Last Legs is a union of two giant egos, capable of cohabitation by a stroke of pure luck. Both Borut and Dusan are utterly disgusted by the notion of being in a traditional band. Whether this is just a result of unpleasant past experiences is irrelevant. They fully intend to drug and hypnotize musicians into blind submission when it’s time to play the material live. Their intent is one-tracked to the point of being fascist. They are only interested in what best serves the purposes of a particular song. In other words, THERE’S NOT A MOTHERFUCKER ALIVE WHO WILL EVER BLACKMAIL US INTO GIVING HIM A GUITAR SOLO AGAIN!
