About Me

Gradiations of Bliss:"Philadelphia's The Northern Hues debut ep is an ecstatic exploration of brit-pop, new wave, American indie-rock and the convergence of these sounds. Weaving together bits of Americana (think early REM) with the melody and hook of New Order, The Northern Hues have constructed a soulful rock album that glows with sonic warmth that floods your speakers like bright and resin rays of light. Formed as a Northern New Jersey in 2002, the band evolved into a sextet, boasting a multitextured guitar and keyboard-driven sound that is lush, but never overblown as each instrument finds its own comfortable niche in the pleasingly complex melodies. The sound is at one moment drifting and dreamlike pop, and the next, driving rock. The subtle attributes of each song, buoyed by beautifully textured and emotive vocals, keep your ear cocked to the stereo as the EP rolls to its conclusion in the explosive "Close Your Eyes". Recorded in NYC's Pianos, this track only hints at The Northern Hues' riveting live sound. And it has been the band's live reputation that has swelled their fanbase in both The City of Brotherly Love and Gotham."

Sounds Like: "SONIC BORREALIS:Recorded by the legendary Scott Herzog (The Dead Milkmen, Tori Amos) at 3rd Story Recording this debut is a fine example of sonic craftsmanship. There's enough space between the instruments to allow each player to shine individually without sounding cold and digitized. The result: Dan Avidan's crooning voice soars above the mix of jangly guitars, well-rounded low-end and playful keyboard vamps and accents. Each delicate sound here is clear as a bell, but couched in the kind of warmth that you thought could only come from virgin vinyl"
