INTRODUCING MR. JERRY PRESLEY
Memphis, Tennessee - What is it like to be the cousin of a movie star, singing idol and a multi-millionaire? Jerry Presley, who is quite a singer in his own right, knows because he is Elvis Presley’s cousin. Elvis’ and Jerry’s great, great grandfathers were brothers. Then Elvis’ great grandmother, Rosella Presley, married into Jerry’s direct Presley line making Elvis and Jerry second cousins. Jerry is used to being Elvis Presley’s cousin, instead of just Jerry Presley. “All my life I have been called Elvis more than I have Jerry. In fact, as far back as grade school, people would call my twin brother Pelvis and me Elvis.â€
Jerry and his identical twin, Terry, used to perform at private parties in their hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. It was not until he was stationed at Ft. Jackson, however, that Jerry got into entertaining on a larger scale. After winning the Third Army Talent Contest at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, he joined the Third Army Soldiers Show at Ft. McPherson, Georgia, and toured Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and North and South Carolina, entertaining troops. After four months of touring, Jerry returned to Ft. Jackson and started performing at various clubs in Columbia, South Carolina. Jerry was drafted in 1969 and went through his basic training and on-the-job training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Jerry was born on March 28Th to Rev. and Mrs. Dale Presley. He has a twin brother named Terry, and older brother named Jim and two sisters, Beverly and Rita. Jerry also plays guitar and piano in addition to his vocalizing. “Although my style is similar to Elvis, I don’t try to imitate him. However, I guess some of my mannerisms are similar to his.†Jerry became the highest paid singer ever at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He has been singing and playing since he was ten years of age and says rock and roll music is his favorite. “I don’t go for hard rock or acid rock. I sing a lot of Elvis’ old songs, but that’s what people want to hear at many of the venues.†Jerry has been performing for 36 years and loves it.
The one question everyone asks him most often is “What was Elvis really like?†“Well, he was just normal. He didn’t try to put himself on a pedestal or anything like that. He would be Elvis with or without his money and fame.†Jerry saw Elvis several times even joining him at the movies in Memphis. The last time Jerry saw Elvis was backstage at the Des Moines, Iowa show on June 23, 1977. “He looked very tired that night but I was still stunned when my mother called on August 16, 1977, and told me that Elvis had died.†Jerry and his twin brother attended Elvis’ funeral.
Jerry admits that the artist he admires most is Elvis Presley. “I suppose my favorite group would be The Beatles.†Jerry has performed with many famous artists including Jackie Wilson, The Drifters, The Platters, The Coasters, Lou Rawls, Tanya Tucker, Barbara Mandrell, Billy Dean, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, The Jordaniares, Former members of The Stamps Quartet, and other famous entertainers. Jerry now owns the “Jerry Presley Legends Revue†with other entertainers paying tribute to Sonny and Cher, The Mamas and Papas, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, and naturally, Jerry pays tribute to his famous cousin, Elvis Presley.
