SPUTNIK! was born with the name. That, along with the desire for Anais and Noah to learn new instruments, to play with S.G., and to generally rock out. The very first "gig" was at Langdon St. Cafe for one of Ben Matchstick's Mystery Fun Nights. It was a joke, but one that seemed to stike a chord with the zeitgeist of the moment. I think Dan Zura played acoustic guitar and Matchstick mostly sang. We knew 3 or 4 songs. Then Tara Jensen (TCell) asked us to play in the Pyralisk warehouse/artstudio/ex-skating rink for her going away party. Ryan Power, who was also leaving town, replaced Dan on electric guitar and we played one set- maybe 9 songs- without a PA, just mics through amps. The idea arose to play LSC again, so we asked Jay Ekis (songwriter and local guitar hero of Maid in Iron fame) if he wanted to be the guitar player for real. At that point we really became a "band" and have been expanding the repertoire ever since. We don't play that often because everyone has other bands and musical careers, which is great because then every show becomes an "event," usually with a theme. You are always encouraged to dress up in your best '80s gear when you come to see us.
